Job Overview
The Medical Assistant / Licensed Practical Nurse (MA/LPN) is a vital member of our patient care team, supporting high-quality, stigma-free healthcare services for individuals receiving PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), HIV testing, HIV treatment, gender-affirming care, and related sexual health services. The MA/LPN provides compassionate, culturally responsive care while supporting providers in delivering exceptional clinical services.
This role focuses on clinical support duties including rooming patients, vital signs, medication administration (within scope of practice), phlebotomy, specimen collection and processing, patient education, administrative support, and community engagement. The MA/LPN plays an essential role in creating a seamless, welcoming experience for every patient.
Responsibilities
· Prepare and room patients for appointments
· Obtain vital signs, health histories, and document clinical information in the EMR
· Perform phlebotomy and collect, prepare, and process specimens for HIV, STI, and other laboratory testing
· Administer routine tests including HIV rapid testing and urine collection for STI screening
· Administer medications, vaccines, and injections within scope of practice and organizational policies
· Assist providers during procedures and examinations
· Provide patient education regarding medications, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions within scope of practice
· Restock exam rooms and maintain clean, organized clinical spaces
· Follow infection prevention standards and proper biohazard disposal procedures
· Schedule appointments and coordinate patient follow-up
· Coordinate with Thrive Rx and outside pharmacies regarding medication refills and prior authorizations
· Assist with MNSure Navigation and Program HH
· Communicate laboratory results and provider instructions under provider or RN direction
· Assist with prior authorizations, referrals, and care coordination activities
· Support community outreach events, mobile clinics, HIV/STI testing events, and health fairs
· Assist with quality improvement initiatives, data entry, and reporting
· Promote services related to HIV prevention, PrEP, STI treatment, harm reduction, primary care, and Thrive Rx
· Participate in ongoing quality improvement and patient experience initiatives
Qualifications
- Commitment to Aliveness' mission of HIV education, prevention and destigmatization
- One of the following:
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from an accredited Medical Assistant program, or
- Current unrestricted Minnesota Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Minimum one year of clinical experience in primary care, infectious disease, sexual health, community health, or a related setting
- Experience performing phlebotomy
- Proficiency using electronic medical records (EMR)
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion, health equity, racial justice, and harm reduction principles
Preferred:
- Experience working with PrEP, HIV care, STI treatment, family medicine, or infectious disease
- Experience administering long-acting injectable medications
- Familiarity with Athenahealth or similar EMR
- Bilingual in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong
- Familiarity with PrEP navigation or HIV care coordination
- Lived experience in or understanding of communities disproportionately impacted by HIV
Pay: $48,000.00 - $56,000.00 per year
