The Facilities Maintenance Specialist is a full-time, on-site role based in San Diego, CA. The Facilities Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of company facilities, equipment, and building systems. This position performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and vendor support across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, boiler, safety, and general building systems. The ideal candidate is hands-on, safety-focused, organized, and able to respond quickly to maintenance needs while maintaining a professional service-oriented attitude.
This role is responsible for the daily upkeep, repair, and safe operation of company facilities, including production, laboratory, office, and common areas. Typical tasks include performing routine building inspections, executing preventive maintenance schedules, and responding promptly to maintenance requests. The Facilities Maintenance Specialist will perform building maintenance such as minor plumbing repairs, carpentry work, and basic equipment servicing, while coordinating with external vendors for specialized work when needed. The role also supports space utilization, ensures compliance with safety and facility standards, and works closely with operations and EHS teams to maintain a clean, efficient, and compliant work environment. Finally, this position will manage the laboratory tooling and equipment calibration activities.
Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
This role includes hands-on facility maintenance, vendor coordination, documentation control, GLP-aligned records support, building system monitoring, security system support, and calibration coordination for applicable equipment.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on CLPT facility equipment and building systems, including filter replacement, fan belt checks, daily boiler checks, and other assigned inspections.
- Coordinate significant preventive maintenance services with approved external vendors, including steam boiler service, specialized equipment maintenance, and other complex facility systems.
- Perform general handyman services and routine facility repairs, including minor plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, fixtures, furniture, walls, and general building upkeep.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and escalate more complex facility repair needs, and coordinate vendor support through completion.
- Use the MetaSys building automation system as needed to monitor facility equipment performance, respond to alarms, and support overall building operations.
- Coordinate recurring facility services such as pest control, janitorial support, facility cleaning, and other routine building service providers.
- Manage and support the facility security system, including access control, system monitoring, vendor coordination, and issue escalation as needed.
- Develop, update, and maintain facilities maintenance procedures to support consistent, compliant, and safe work practices.
- Set up and maintain preventive maintenance documentation for facility equipment within the QMS system.
- Document facility equipment repairs, service activity, vendor work, and maintenance history within the appropriate QMS records.
- Coordinate with Quality to ensure facilities documentation remains compliant with applicable GLP requirements and internal procedures.
- Ensure required equipment permits, licenses, certificates, and inspection records are current, accessible, and maintained within the QMS system.
- Coordinate calibration services for applicable equipment, with primary focus on laboratory equipment requiring scheduled calibration.
- Ensure laboratory equipment calibration records, service documentation, and related equipment information are properly maintained in the QMS system.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical school, trade training, or equivalent hands-on maintenance experience preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of facilities, maintenance, mechanical, laboratory support, industrial, or related technician experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of general building maintenance, preventive maintenance practices, basic mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and hand/power tools.
- Ability to perform routine facility repairs and determine when issues require escalation to management or specialized vendor support.
- Ability to follow written procedures, complete maintenance documentation accurately, and maintain organized records in a QMS or similar documentation system.
- Experience coordinating vendors, service providers, inspections, preventive maintenance visits, and repair follow-up activities.
- Strong communication, organization, time management, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize maintenance requests, respond professionally to urgent facility needs, and support safe facility operations.
- Valid driver’s license may be required depending on site responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with steam boilers, hydronic systems, commercial HVAC, pumps, controls, or manufacturing/industrial utilities.
- Experience with MetaSys or similar building automation systems.
- Experience working in GLP, GMP, laboratory, life sciences, regulated manufacturing, or quality-controlled environments.
- Experience using QMS platforms, computerized maintenance management systems, calibration tracking systems, or digital work-order platforms.
- Experience coordinating calibration services for laboratory equipment or other regulated equipment.
- OSHA 10, forklift certification, EPA 608, boiler operator training, or related trade certifications preferred.
- Experience with access control, camera, alarm, or facility security systems preferred.
- Basic carpentry, painting, drywall, locksmithing, welding, or fabrication skills are a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, use stairs, and work in mechanical spaces for extended periods.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors, including exposure to noise, heat, cold, dust, equipment rooms, and active facility environments.
- Ability to use personal protective equipment and follow all safety requirements.
Schedule and Work Environment
This is a hands-on facilities role that may require early mornings, evenings, weekends, overtime, or on-call response depending on operational needs. The Facilities Technician works in office, production, warehouse, utility, mechanical, roof, and exterior building areas as assigned.
