At the Y, Afterschool Counselors do more than supervise children; they build meaningful relationships, encourage curiosity, support positive behavior, and help create an environment where every child feels welcomed, valued, and supported.
What You'll Do
- Build positive, authentic relationships with children, families, school personnel, volunteers, and fellow staff.
- Serve as a positive role model while helping children develop confidence, independence, and positive relationships.
- Assist Afterschool Site Leads and Teachers with engaging daily activities, including arts and crafts, active games, enrichment activities, and snack time.
- Provide attentive supervision and help ensure children are safe, supported, and never left unattended.
- Encourage positive behavior through appropriate guidance, encouragement, and positive reinforcement.
- Help maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment where every child can learn and belong.
- Assist with daily attendance, supply requests, newsletters, and other program records.
- Participate in YMCA events, staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures related to youth supervision, boundaries, safety, abuse prevention, and high-risk activities.
- Recognize and report concerns, suspicious or inappropriate behaviors, and policy violations in accordance with YMCA procedures and mandated reporting requirements.
- Support programming at other YMCA 21C Afterschool locations when needed.
- Bring energy, creativity, patience, and a caring attitude to each day.
- Help create positive experiences that strengthen children, families, and our community.
What Makes You a Great Fit
- You enjoy working with children and helping them succeed.
- You are dependable, patient, caring, and emotionally mature.
- You can build positive relationships with children and families from a variety of backgrounds.
- You communicate clearly and can explain activities and expectations in ways children of different ages can understand.
- Previous experience working with children is preferred, but we're also interested in individuals who have a genuine passion for youth development.
- You are at least 16 years old.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, along with Child Abuse Prevention training, must be completed within 30 days of hire.
- You are willing to complete all required YMCA training and maintain required certifications.
- You can successfully complete a nationwide criminal and sex offender registry background screening.
- You are committed to the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Work Environment
This is an active position working directly with children in indoor and outdoor environments. The role requires the ability to move throughout the program environment, including standing, walking, running, reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching, and other movements necessary to actively supervise and participate with children.
The position may occasionally require lifting or moving equipment or other items up to 50 pounds. Employees must be able to remain alert, hear children's voices and distress signals, and respond appropriately to safety concerns.
