Purpose of Position:
Sewing Machine Operators at West Point is responsible for skilled, hands-on production of cadet uniforms using industrial sewing machines, with duties spanning sewing, alterations, repairs, and equipment maintenance, all in compliance with federal standards and safety requirements
Operates a standard or high-speed sewing machine to perform a number of operations in the manufacture of the cadet uniform.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential):
- Operate high-speed industrial sewing machines to sew, alter, or repair wearing apparel and other fabric articles, including cadet uniforms such as white coats, trousers, dress gray trousers, etc.
- Perform applications, alterations, repairs, and hand sewing on USMA cadet uniforms as assigned
- Use shears and patterns for trimming, clipping, and marking
- Maintain and repair sewing equipment, including threading, bobbin winding, tension adjustment, and oiling
- Inspect completed work for quality, accuracy, and compliance with specifications
- Follow safety protocols and use PPE; maintain clean, safe work areas
- Coordinate with supervisors and other trades on production schedules and requirements
- Document work performed, including time, materials, and completion status
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Requires demonstrated skill in operating industrial sewing machines and related trade work.
- Ability to thread machines, adjust tension, wind bobbins, and perform basic maintenance.
- May include military or civilian sewing machine operation training.
Physical Factors
- Must be physically capable of handling all aspects of work.
- Must be able to lift and carry items/equipment/material weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Required to wear appropriate safety gear when the operation necessitates.
- Must be eligible for site access and CAC if position requires.
- Must communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
