Job Overview
The Director of Preschool & Childcare is a position within the structure of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, reporting to the Preschool & Childcare Board who report to the Congregation Council. The Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the Preschool & Childcare daily operations, including all matters pertaining to personnel, finance, enrollment, discipline, policy development and implementation. The Director provides and coordinates the necessary support, resources, supervision, and leadership to provide nurturing care and education to young children in a faith-based, group setting.
Responsibilities

- Implement priorities, goals, and objectives set forth by the Preschool & Childcare Board; Communicate regularly, participate in monthly meetings, and maintain a positive relationship with its members. Participate in an annual review with the board president.
- Maintain a strong relationship with the congregation of St. Timothy through regular meetings with Church staff, and occasional attendance at congregation meetings and events as requested.
- Communicate proactively with Preschool & Childcare Board, Church staff, Preschool and Childcare staff, families, and licensing agencies.
- Create and maintain a positive and safe environment for children in our care, fostering a culture of child protection and abuse prevention, overseeing emergency procedures and risk management.
- Ensure that the Preschool and Childcare prioritize all Iowa HHS guidelines and that we are complying at all times. This includes taking corrective action when we are not in compliance.
- Oversee the implementation of all policies and procedures. Work with the Preschool & Childcare Board to review, update, and create new policies and procedures as needed.
- Keep up with all professional licensing and training requirements for the State of Iowa.
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a professional staff, leading them to create a positive, motivating, inclusive work environment. Conduct annual reviews with direct reports.
- Collaborate with Preschool & Childcare staff to develop, review, and evaluate quality programming.
- Establish an annual budget for approval by the congregation. Oversee financial management, ensuring budget compliance and providing reporting to the Preschool and Childcare Board on a regular basis along with any other fiscal reporting requirements.
- Work with Assistant Director, Congregation Trustees, and Janitors to ensure the facility is maintained and in compliance with all state licensing requirements. Ensure that the facility is left in a clean and orderly condition and set up for all church activities.
- Represent St. Timothy in the community and, as required, act as a liaison between other agencies and partners, sharing information with the Preschool & Childcare Board.
- Ensure all marketing and communications are in line with St. Timothy’s values.
- Temporarily serve as a supervising caregiver for brief periods of time on an as-needed basis (e.g., covering employee breaks or unscheduled absences).
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- At least 21 years of age Minimum education level of Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree preferred
- At least 3 years of experience in a high-quality childcare or early childhood education setting, hands-on teaching or business management experience preferred
- Must pass all required background checks
- Must be able to meet and maintain certification through the Iowa Department of Human Services as a Childcare Director. All HHS required training, and documentation must be provided and completed within 90 days of employment.
- Basic Computer and telephone skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, and the ability to learn new programs and technology
- Knowledge of basic accounting and budgeting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
This position requires work in person and will require physical activity such as lifting, bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching. Must be able to lift 30 pounds routinely. Staff will likely be exposed to changes in temperature, fumes, odors, and infectious disease conditions.
Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
