Position Description: Reading Specialist (Part-Time, 2-8 hours/week)
PLEASE NOTE: This position will not begin until mid August
Purpose: The Youth Life Foundation of Richmond operates Learning Centers to develop leaders by making long-term investments in children from under-resourced communities. By supporting students academically, developing their character from a young age, raising expectations, and investing in their lives through committed mentoring relationships, these youth will rise above their circumstances to become tomorrow’s leaders.
We are looking for 1-2 qualified Reading Specialists to work with our elementary students on a part time basis on-site during our after-school program hours.
Job Description: Specialists will conduct reading and literacy activities with a small break-out group of 1-4 students at similar reading levels during our regular after-school programming hours. We encourage specialists to use their expertise to incorporate strategic reading activities and methods as needed with their particular group of students.
Time Frame: Specialists will need to be available to teach for 30-60 minutes during our after-school program times (4-5:00pm, Monday-Thursday). After-School Tutoring Begins August 31, 2026. Planning time must happen prior to the session (preferably on-site, but can be remote), but will be compensated. We require that specialists commit to coming at least two days a week (Monday through Thursday; we do not have academic programming on Fridays) to work with the same students. Accounting for 30 minutes of planning before each 30 minute session with students, the position could provide a maximum of 8 hours/week. We ask that specialists commit to an entire academic semester.
Qualifications:
- A teaching license or teaching experience in a public or private elementary school
- Ability to create engaging, individualized reading intervention plans for a small group of students
- A desire to see all students learn how to read and grow to love reading
- Experience working with urban youth a plus
* Note: A background & criminal check will be required prior to hiring.
Support Provided: Youth Life will provide testing results and an academic overview for each student with whom the specialist would work. Specialists will have use of teaching materials and manipulatives at our centers, as well as a Road to Reading manual, training video, and materials. Staff at each center will assist with student introductions and serve as an academic and behavioral support if needed during and after the session.
Pay for Reading Specialists will be hourly, including up to 30 minutes of planning time for each 30 minutes of instruction. Compensation will be $30/hour.
NOTE: This is a grant funded position. Funding is guaranteed through December 2026, at which time the program may be modified or discontinued unless additional grant funding is acquired.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $30.00 per hour
