Erie is built on the strong foundation of the nationally accredited program at Erie Neighborhood House, a progressive social service agency in Chicago's West Town community. Located in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, Erie opened in September 2005 serving 80 students in kindergarten and first grade. Currently the school has 415 students, grades Kindergarten through eighth.
Erie is seeking to hire a Diverse Learning Instructional Assistant. The DLIA’s basic function is to assist the Special Education Teacher and General Education Teacher in reinforcing academic efforts with children with various disabilities, including behavioral disorders, autism, learning disabilities, and emotional disabilities, in accordance with the child’s Individual Education Program (IEP).
Position Responsibilities:
Curriculum and Design, Instruction and Student Assessment
Work collaboratively with the grade level teachers to:
- Design and implement differentiated curriculum aligning school standards to individual student needs
- Use relevant data to inform practice
- Provide a learning environment that encourages and motivates ALL students to learn
- Progress monitor your students regularly
- Write IEPs, behavior plans, and IEP report cards for all students on your teaching caseload
Partnering with Students and Families
- Work collaboratively with parents by phone or email on a regular basis to share with parents both positive and negative feedback about their child.
- Attend occasional after-school events such as potluck dinners, student performances, and other school related events
Building of School Culture
- Acknowledge each student’s bilingual and bicultural experience as an asset for the child’s own development and that of the other students
- Adhere to school academic and disciplinary protocols
- Demonstrate strong and effective classroom management
- Serve on school committees
- Hold yourself and your students to the highest academic and personal standards
Maintenance of Organizational Culture
- Collaborate with other teachers and the principal to advance the school’s mission.
- Continually improve teaching by:
- Initiating and pursuing professional development opportunities both inside and outside of the school
- Being open to constructive feedback
- Work collaboratively with all staff to create a culture of learning within the school
- Attend all staff meetings and additional meetings as needed; including in-services Open houses and parent conferences
- Willingness to make your teaching practice public within the school
