Brief Description
The Finance Manager / Controller leads the day-to-day financial operations of Plymouth Church and its pre-school, Plymouth Church School. Reporting to the Executive Administrator and supervising the Finance Associate, the Finance Manager maintains the organization’s books and records, manages the monthly and annual close, oversees payroll and accounts payable, prepares financial reports for the Council and leadership, and supports the annual audit and budget process. The role keeps Plymouth’s finances accurate, timely, and well-controlled as the church and school continue to grow.
Supervisory Responsibility
- Supervises the Finance Associate, to whom routine transaction processing and donor-service tasks are delegated; reviews their work for accuracy and timeliness.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Close
- Maintain the books and records in accordance with GAAP and conventional nonprofit and church accounting practices.
- Lead the monthly and annual close; ensure all accounts are reconciled and all entries posted on schedule.
- Oversee accounts payable; review and approve online payments and related journal entries.
- Maintain investment records and post associated journal entries.
Payroll
- Process payroll and post the associated journal entries, including taxes, health benefits, and pension contributions.
Reporting & Budget
- Prepare monthly Council reports: budget-to-actual, investment, and cash flow.
- Prepare monthly expenditure reports for leadership across church and school program areas.
- Support the Executive Administrator in the annual budget process, and provide budget-to-actual analysis and basic forecasting to aid planning.
Audit & Controls
- Coordinate and prepare for the annual audit; assemble schedules and provide the documentation auditors request.
- Support preparation of year-end financial statements.
- Help maintain sound internal controls and records-retention practices for electronic and paper records.
Oversight of Delegated Work
- Review the Finance Associate’s donor giving statements, thrift-store entries, and responses to giving inquiries for accuracy and timeliness.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field — Required
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, including close, payroll, and reporting — Required
- Proficiency with ERP / accounting systems and Excel — Required
- CPA certification — Preferred
- Nonprofit, church, or fund-accounting experience — Preferred
- Supervisory experience — Preferred
Meetings & Schedule
- Bi-weekly team meetings, plus additional meetings with the Executive Administrator or senior leadership as needed.
- Monday through Friday during regular daytime business hours; specific schedule coordinated with the Executive Administrator.
- This is an onsite position at 75 Hicks Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
