JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations of the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA), maintaining the accuracy and integrity of financial records, and contributing to timely financial reporting. This position performs a broad range of accounting functions and reviews the work of accounting support staff for accuracy and proper coding. Work is performed in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable federal and state requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Accounting Operations
- Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and other accounting transactions for accuracy and proper coding.
- Process and review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
- Ensure transactions are coded correctly to general ledger accounts and grant/project codes.
- Track and reconcile grant expenditures, ensuring costs are allowable, allocable, and properly documented in accordance with grant requirements.
- Review the work of accounting support staff to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established procedures.
2. Financial Reporting
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial reports for management and the CFO.
- Monitor actual expenditures against the approved budget and report variances with analysis.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and ensure all accounts are properly reconciled.
3. Audit Support
- Assist the CFO as a primary point of contact for external auditors.
- Prepare and organize supporting documentation and schedules required for the annual audit.
- Assist in implementing audit recommendations and ensuring findings are addressed in a timely manner.
4. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
- Assist with the preparation and submission of required regulatory and grant-related financial reports.
- Support compliance with applicable federal and state financial reporting requirements.
5. Other Duties
- Identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.
- Assist the CFO with special projects, analysis, and other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Minimum of two (2) years of accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience in a public sector, government, or nonprofit environment.
- Familiarity with grant accounting or fund accounting concepts.
- Experience with mid-market ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics or similar).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to sit for an extended period of time.
- Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer and other office equipment.
- Must be able to pick up and carry 25 lbs.
- Must be able to drive an automobile.
