Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island (“VSCLI”) in Huntington is seeking Licensed Veterinary Technicians for its Surgery Department and its ICU and Emergency Room.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- General nursing care of patients
- Responsible for the care of the animals in surgery, ICU/ER, and isolation areas
- IV catheterization
- Blood and urine collection
- Assisting veterinarians with emergency care, including responding to an emergency event
- Administer prescribed medications, as directed
- Perform diagnostic testing, including labs, Radiography, CT scanner, MRI
- Responsible for accurate & timely data entry regarding patient vitals, medical status, urination, bowel movements, feeding, etc.
- Animal prep for surgery including IV catheterization, intubation, preparation of surgical area
- Administration of anesthesia, including charting animal’s vitals while under anesthesia in Instinct
- Monitoring of patients while under anesthesia and during recovery
- Assists veterinarians with surgery, including cleaning, maintaining and sterilization of instruments and surgical equipment and area
- Post-surgical patient care and monitoring while in recovery
- Proficiency in animal restraint
- Performs, or assists the veterinarian in a variety of animal health procedures encompassing diagnostic lab tests (for in-house lab test and off-site lab testing), administration of meds, and assisting with or performing medical treatments
- Promotes responsible pet ownership and answers questions concerning animal health, behavior, and care
- Maintaining clean work areas, assisting in cleaning sanitizing and keeping uncluttered all areas in the hospital, including exam rooms and kennels
- On-call responsibilities
- Position Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
- Professional client communication and education obtaining medical histories and symptoms
- Laboratory procedures including but not limited to: hematology, cytology, urinalysis, blood chemistry
- Diagnostic imaging (Radiography, CT Scan, MRI) and implementing safety protocols of fellow staff members
- Nursing skills including: restraining patients, administering medications PO/IV/SUBQ/IM, maintaining bandages, proficient IV catheter placement and venipuncture, surgery prep, anesthesia monitoring
- Must possess strong communication skills, good judgment and be able to manage stressful situations, and work with others on a team respectfully
- Venipuncture, catheterization, anesthetic monitoring (both manual & electronic), surgical prep & assisting, IV fluid administration & monitoring (fluid pumps), cleaning, perform digital radiographs, intubation, administer injections, administer oral medications, nursing & patient monitoring skills, perform in-clinic lab, organizational skills, communication, listening and documentation.
- Provide exceptional and compassionate care for our patients from admission through discharge
- Support veterinarians in all facets of care, including interpreting and executing treatment directives
- Complete all necessary technical procedures and treatments, with strict adherence to department and hospital protocols
- Communicate professionally with clients and referral veterinarians
- Maintain concise and accurate records of the patient's treatment progress and charges
Position Qualifications:
- New York State Licensed Veterinary Technician – Must furnish a copy prior to first day of work
- Must have animal handling experience and ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to work successfully as part of a team
- High School Diploma (or equivalent), Associates Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum 1-3 years of experience
- Knowledge of basic veterinary medical terminology
- Must be a TEAM PLAYER
- Must have ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations
- Ability to lift an animal weighing up to 40 pounds
- Ability to use a computer in order to update the patient management system, Instinct

Pay: $28.00 - $40.00 per hour
