Location: Montpelier, VT | Schedule: Full-time, in-office
What you'll do
- Provide in person customer service and front-desk reception at our Montpelier office.
- Assist taxpayers by phone and email; triage inquiries and route as needed.
- Review tax returns for accuracy, correct errors, and request additional information when required.
- Collaborate with teammates and other state agencies/municipal partners to meet deadlines and service-level expectations.
- Support special projects and help maintain efficient workflow processes.
What we're looking for
- Experience in business, finance, or fiscal duties and strong customer service skills.
- Knowledge of Vermont/local government is helpful.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex topics to diverse audiences with patience and clarity.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn new systems and processes.
- Must be comfortable working at a front desk, handling phones, and responding to email inquiries.
Work conditions and requirements
- Full-time, in-office position located in the Montpelier main office reception area.
- Reliable personal transportation to the Montpelier office is required.
- Ability to handle confidential taxpayer information with discretion and professionalism.

Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates.
