The Mechanic Lead serves as the primary technical and operational support for the Maintenance Supervisor by coordinating maintenance activities, directing daily workflow, and ensuring the effective execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs. This role provides leadership and guidance to maintenance personnel, assists with planning and scheduling, oversees work order management, and acts as the Maintenance Supervisor's representative during periods of absence. The Mechanic Lead is responsible for promoting safe work practices, maintaining equipment reliability, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring maintenance operations aligning with production and business objectives.
Role: Intermittent / Minimal: The employee normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments. Moderate Work Independence. Limited Decision Making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Maintenance Supervisor with daily maintenance planning and scheduling.
- Provide direction and support to maintenance employees as needed.
- Serve as the lead contact for the maintenance team when the supervisor is unavailable.
- Communicate work assignments, priorities, and schedule changes to maintenance personnel.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and safe work practices.
- Create, assign, update, and close work orders in the CMMS.
- Monitor work order completion and follow up on overdue tasks.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules and ensure assigned work is completed.
- Assist in prioritizing maintenance requests based on operational needs.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and maintenance emergencies as required.
- Track equipment downtime and identify recurring maintenance issues.
- Assist with troubleshooting and corrective actions.
- Support equipment reliability and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in maintenance planning, root cause investigations, and process improvements.
- Coordinate parts requests and inventory needs.
- Work with storeroom personnel and vendors to ensure parts and materials are available.
- Support purchasing and budget-related activities as assigned.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and CMMS data.
- Review work orders for completeness and accuracy.
- Assist with maintenance KPI tracking and reporting.
- Maintain maintenance logs, inspections, and compliance documentation.
- Communicate maintenance priorities, equipment concerns, and operational issues to management.
- Serve as a communication link between maintenance, production, and leadership teams.
- Report staffing, equipment, and departmental concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Follow and promote all company safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to lockout/tagout (LOTO) requirements.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions and safety concerns.
- Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and training activities.
- Support compliance with all company, regulatory, and environmental requirements
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in industrial maintenance preferred
3–5 years of industrial maintenance experience preferred, including experience with CMMS systems.
Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
Effective communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
Ability to troubleshoot mechanical failures and identify root causes of equipment issues.
Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, maintenance procedures, and technical documentation.
Ability to prioritize work and respond effectively to changing production demands.
Knowledge of mechanical equipment, rotating machinery, gearboxes, bearings, lubrication systems, and preventive maintenance practices.
