JOB DUTIES: Under general supervision and is responsible for the general operation of heavy equipment within the Solid Waste Division. Performs various duties such as safely operating and performing general maintenance of heavy and special equipment involved in the daily management of solid waste within the County facilities and systems. Written and electronic documentation performed during daily duties for equipment, operations, and time entry. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Solid Waste Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE OF JOB: Has knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures of basic rules and regulations pertaining to the disposal of solid waste. Able to verify various materials in order to determine proper disposal. Has the ability to effectively communicate with the public, providing information regarding rules and regulations. Has the ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and co-workers. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to properly operate various types of large construction equipment. Knows how to perform preventive maintenance on all equipment utilized in the performance of daily activities. Able to perform daily activities as instructed without the need of direct supervision. Able to ensure a safe environment as necessary in promoting the safety of self and others in the vicinity. Has comprehensive knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation. Performs related tasks as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to tracked dozer, waste compactor, roll-off truck, excavator, motor grader, tractor, rotary cutter, mower, skid-steer, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work. Work involves moving, climbing, bending, and stooping for periods of time. Must be able to lift or carry weights of 10 to 50 pounds. Requires the ability to read a variety of documents such as work orders, vehicle records and charts, equipment checklists, etc. Requires the ability to talk, hear, record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. Must be a responsible person with ability to learn and use new skills and experience performing all phases of equipment operation or a closely related position which provides required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid S.C. driver’s license.
Compensation is dependent on experience (possession of a CDL, OSHA or equivalent certifications, years of experience in a related field, etc.).
Pay: $39,836.00 - $58,425.00 per year
