Ironrod Steel Co. is a Houston-based steel fabricator specializing in fencing, handrails, gates, and miscellaneous metals. We sub to general contractors on commercial and public-sector projects and we're growing our bid volume.
We're getting more GC bid invites than we can work — BuildingConnected, plan rooms, direct solicitations — and we need an experienced estimator to help us win this work. This is a commission-based partnership: you work the bids, we win together.
Compensation: 3-5% of won contracts. No cap.
What you'd do:
- Review incoming bid invites and filter for fit
- Pull plans and do takeoffs on fencing, handrails, railings, and misc metal scopes
- Price bids using our unit costs and material pricing
- Assemble and submit bid packages on deadline
- Follow up with GCs on bid status
What we're looking for:
- Estimating experience in fencing, chain link, ornamental iron, handrails, or misc metals
- Comfortable reading commercial construction plans and specs
- Familiar with BuildingConnected, PlanHub, iSqFt, or similar bid platforms
- Comfortable with AI-assisted workflows — we use AI tools for takeoffs, pricing, and bid assembly. You don't need to be a tech person, but you need to be open to working with new tools, not fighting them
- Self-motivated — this is commission work, not a clock-punching job
Ideal candidate:
- Semi-retired estimator looking for flexible income
- Freelance estimator adding another client
- Estimator between positions who wants to stay sharp and earn while they look
- Someone who's done this at a fencing or misc metals sub and knows the scopes cold
Not required but a plus:
- Houston-based (for occasional site visits)
- Existing GC relationships in the Houston market
- Experience with public-sector / MWBE bids
Interested? Send a message with your background and what scopes you've estimated. No formal resume required — just tell us what you know.
