POSITION SUMMARY:
The Teacher Assistant works with the Lead Teacher/Teacher to assist with Traditional and/or Montessori curriculum development and delivery, materials, equipment and facilities requirements, and attends in-service trainings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists in preparing classroom for daily activities including pre and post teaching activities;
Assists with monitoring classroom to ensure the safety of the students;
Assists in the delivery of Traditional and/or Montessori extensions in the classroom;
Assists in preparing classroom incident reports and communicates with parents on daily behaviors of students;
Assists in preparing classroom lesson plans and coordinates activities with other education staff;
Assists in coordinating student transportation;
Assists with the evaluation of student progress;
Assists Lead Teacher/Teacher to keep current on instructional service delivery mechanisms and implements changes in Traditional and/or Montessori curriculum;
Assists in guiding students through technology lessons;
Works with program staff to assist with cultural and Tiwa Language integration into the program;
Other position related duties as required and assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or its equivalent G.E.D.; Must be able to attain CDA Certification (Child Development Accreditation) within 2 years of hire and have 6 months of experience in working with children ages 3-5 in a child care setting; Must be able to attain food handlers card and First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of hire; Must possess valid Texas driver’s license and be insurable; Must be able to successfully pass a post offer drug screen and criminal history background check.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Computer literate (working knowledge of MS Office Suite); Must have excellent interpersonal skills and service standards in order to maintain good community and staff relations; Ability to acquire and maintain current education requirements (24 hours) of child development training; Ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills; Ability to demonstrate and model unwavering ethical behavior; Must be able to work with families from various socio-economic backgrounds; Knowledge of public elementary school functions; Knowledge or ability to obtain knowledge of Montessori teaching method; Ability to work independently and in a team setting; Ability work with a team of instructional aides, internal cultural partners, and external consultants; Must be able to adapt to multi-projects and challenging assignments; Outgoing personality and able to work with the public; Must be detailed oriented; Must be self-motivated and able to exercise independent judgment; Must be able to adequately prioritize and administer daily activities; Excellent time management and organizational skills; Must be culturally sensitive.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds. The vision requirements include: close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
