Accounting Manager - Fort Worth
The Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operation and the integrity of the firm's financial records. This is a hands-on role for an experienced accountant who can lead a small team, prepare and review accounting work, solve problems, and adapt as the firm grows and its processes continue to mature.
Reporting to the CFO, the Accounting Manager will own the monthly close, reconciliations, AP and AR operations, payment processing, and related accounting activities. The CFO will provide documented procedures, templates, training, and ongoing support. The Accounting Manager will be expected to learn the firm's processes, apply them consistently, enforce established controls, and escalate significant issues with appropriate urgency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own and complete the monthly close by the established deadline, including journal entries, accruals, account analysis, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and review balance-sheet reconciliations using CFO-provided templates; investigate and resolve reconciling items promptly.
- Ensure the general ledger and financial statements are complete, accurate, supported, and review-ready before communicating that the period is closed.
- Provide dependable financial data for the CFO's KPI reporting, owner presentations, forecasting, budgeting, and analysis.
- Manage and review the work of the AP and AR team, including workload prioritization, timeliness, accuracy, training, and accountability.
- Maintain reliable AP and AR records, resolve discrepancies, and ensure transactions are recorded in the correct period and accounts.
- Oversee payment processing in accordance with established approval requirements and segregation-of-duties controls.
- Oversee cash receipts, cash application, case-related revenue recognition, and operating and trust/IOLTA reconciliations using established procedures and CFO-provided templates.
- Coordinate with attorneys, paralegals, and other employees when accounting information or issue resolution is needed, while helping reduce unnecessary follow-up through disciplined processes.
- Set clear expectations for direct reports, review their work, provide practical coaching, and address performance or compliance issues promptly.
- Follow and enforce accounting policies, documented procedures, approval requirements, and internal controls established by the CFO.
- Identify the root cause of accounting and process problems, determine practical next steps, and drive issues through resolution.
- Use sound judgment to resolve routine issues independently and escalate material, unusual, or time-sensitive matters to the CFO early.
- Adapt to changing responsibilities, systems, transaction volumes, and priorities, and contribute practical feedback as processes evolve.
Requirements:
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful responsibility for month-end close and balance-sheet reconciliations.
- Prior experience managing, supervising, or formally reviewing the work of accounting staff.
- Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and the ability to apply accounting principles to practical transactions and issues.
- Experience working in an ERP or comparable accounting system and the ability to learn QuickBooks Online and the firm's other systems.
- Strong Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, PivotTables, data analysis, and organized reconciliation workbooks. More than basic spreadsheet proficiency is required.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate discrepancies, solve problems, manage competing priorities, and meet close deadlines.
- Clear communication skills and the judgment to work effectively with accounting staff, attorneys, paralegals, and firm leadership.
