We are a growing utility construction company operating primarily throughout the Midwest. Our fleet consists of approximately 70 trucks and 60 trailers supporting directional drilling, utility installation, and infrastructure projects. We are seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to oversee fleet operations, maintenance programs, safety compliance, equipment acquisition, and vendor relationships.
This position is ideal for someone who understands both the operational and mechanical aspects of construction fleets and can help maximize equipment uptime while controlling costs.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee a fleet of small and medium-duty trucks, specialty utility vehicles, and trailers
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs
- Coordinate repairs, parts procurement, and equipment servicing
- Supervise and support at least one mobile mechanic
- Monitor fleet utilization, downtime, maintenance costs, and vehicle performance
- Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, vehicle inspections, and safety requirements
- Manage GPS and vehicle tracking systems
- Establish and maintain relationships with repair facilities, parts suppliers, dealerships, and equipment vendors
- Negotiate pricing for repairs, parts, vehicle purchases, and equipment acquisitions
- Coordinate equipment replacements and fleet expansion planning
- Support field operations by ensuring equipment availability and reliability
- Maintain maintenance records, inspection documentation, and fleet reporting metrics
- Work closely with operations and management teams to improve fleet efficiency and reduce operating costs
Preferred Experience
Candidates should have direct experience with many of the following:
- Directional drills (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar)
- Bucket trucks
- Medium-duty trucks
- Vacuum trailers
- Drill trailers
- Flatbed trailers
- Dump trailers
- Reel trailers
- Utility construction equipment
- Fleet maintenance management software
- GPS and vehicle tracking systems
Qualifications
- 5+ years of fleet management experience
- Utility construction or telecommunications construction experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of DOT regulations and vehicle safety requirements
- Experience supervising mechanics and coordinating field repairs
- Proven ability to negotiate with vendors, dealerships, and service providers
- Established industry relationships with repair shops, suppliers, or dealerships preferred
- Experience purchasing trucks, trailers, and construction equipment
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Compensation
- Compensation consists of a competitive base salary plus performance incentives tied to fleet uptime, maintenance cost control, safety compliance, and vendor management. Total compensation can exceed the advertised salary range for top performers.
