Job Overview
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides hands-on support, supervision, and guidance to individuals with developmental disabilities in a behavior management day program setting. Some of those disabilities may include: Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability, Autism, and Epilepsy. The DSP assists participants in developing skills, promoting independence, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment while following individualized behavior support plans and behavioral support plans. The program is held in a day program environment. DSP will align with SCLARC Title 17 & Title 22 duties and responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including toileting and grooming
- Support residents in community outings or recreational activities to promote social engagement and mental well-being
- Follow individualized care plans designed by healthcare teams, including Epilepsy, intellectual disability, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy
- Behavior Management & Crisis Intervention:
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required; DSP 1 and 2 Required.Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Special Education, or related field preferred.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and/or behavioral challenges preferred.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in crisis situations.
- Understanding of behavior management principles and person-centered approaches.
- Ability to follow structured behavior plans and work collaboratively within a team.
- Certifications & Training:
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or other de-escalation training preferred.
- Must pass a background check and meet any licensing requirements as per state regulations.
- DSP 1 and 2 Certificate
- Recognize and respond appropriately to challenging behaviors using approved crisis intervention techniques (CPI).
- Utilize proactive strategies to reduce behavioral incidents and reinforce positive behaviors.
- Implement de-escalation techniques and ensure the safety of all participants and staff.
- Program Implementation & Engagement:
- Facilitate structured activities that promote social interaction, community integration, and skill-building.
- Assist participants in achieving their individual goals as outlined in their Individual Service Plans (ISPs).
- Foster an inclusive, respectful, and engaging environment for all program participants.
- Communication & Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with behavior specialists,management, therapists, and families to ensure consistency in care.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and provide feedback on participants' progress.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals served.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $21.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 80.0 per week
