The Materials Testing Laboratory provides field exploration, sampling, and technical support regarding the design, use, application, evaluation and research associated with construction materials and maintains the Department's national accreditation with AASHTO RE: SOURCE and ASTM CCRL laboratory inspection programs.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for supervising the State Materials Laboratory Entry and Sample Preparation Unit and activities related to construction materials testing and acceptance including but not limited to maintaining compliance with annual AASHTO RE: SOURCE and ASTM CCRL accreditation requirements.
How does it get done?
The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following.
- The position will directly supervise work of at least two (2) full time equivalent employees
act upon leave requests; conduct annual performance evaluations; interview and
select job applicants and train personnel.
- The position will receive, prepare, log, and monitor the status and progress of all samples and
materials submitted to the State Materials Laboratory for testing.
- The position will perform complex laboratory tests and participate in inspections that are large in scope
and/or complexity; ensure quality of laboratory test results by reviewing, auditing, and certifying
test results; complete lab reports for documentation; and inspect District Laboratories and Private
Testing Laboratories.
- This position will maintain and calibrate equipment; keep current all certification required to perform
sampling and testing within the Lab Unit; revise testing and operating procedures as required for compliance
with NMDOT TTCP, AASHTO RE: SOURCE and ASTM CCRL accreditation.
- Incumbent will perform other duties as assigned by management which are reasonably
within this scope of this position.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and ten (10) years of relevant experience, six (6) months of which must be supervisory or senior level experience managing projects or assignments. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain or pass and receive Defensive Driving Certification as a condition of continued employment. Employment requires successful completion of a preemployment physical and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and driver's license verification are required and employment is conditional pending results. Requires Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certification in Aggregate and Soils Testing within one year of hire. May require Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Concrete Field and Lab Testing.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in office/field in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. May include exposure to: ' Sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to ' Moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; ' Highway speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; ' Falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; ' Heavy lifting; sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also include being performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change or geographical assignments; interaction with the public, local, county schools and city officials by phone and in person. Possibility of geographic location change.
