The City of Jonesboro is seeking a dynamic and service-oriented individual to serve as a Part-Time Certified Police Officer (Building Security). As the county seat and economic heart of Clayton County, the City of Jonesboro population grows to over 10,000 during the day; however, approximately 5,000 residents live within the city limits. This position serves as the primary security presence for the Jonesboro City Center, which houses the City's Administrative Offices, Municipal Court, and Police Department.
JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Part-Time Certified Police Officer (Building Security)
REPORTS TO: Corporals, Sergeants, Lieutenants, and/or Chief of Police
OVERVIEW: This is a part-time position responsible for providing security services for the Jonesboro City Center campus. The officer works under the general supervision of a Sergeant and performs a wide range of duties designed to maintain a safe and secure environment for City facilities, employees, court personnel, elected officials, and visitors.
The officer is responsible for monitoring access to City facilities, conducting security patrols, responding to incidents and emergencies, maintaining order during Municipal Court proceedings and public meetings, and enforcing applicable federal, state, and local laws. The position contributes directly to the protection of public property, critical governmental operations, and the overall safety and well-being of the Jonesboro community.
EDUCATION & DIRECTLY APPLICABLE EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or GED
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have a Georgia Peace Officer Standard Training Certification and be recertified annually.
- Must be able to successfully complete written examinations, background investigation, oral examination, graph examinations, and drug screening.
- Must be able to successfully complete a standard physical fitness test, medical examination and drug screening, a polygraph examination, and psychological testing.
- Must be certified in the use of firearms.
- Valid Class M Georgia Driver's License.
- Must have good habits and moral character.
- Must be free of any felony convictions or sufficient misdemeanor convictions to evidence a pattern.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Building Security Officer performs duties requiring independent judgment and decision-making. The officer frequently encounters situations that require immediate response to security concerns, suspicious activity, building access issues, medical emergencies, disturbances, and other incidents without the opportunity to consult a supervisor beforehand.
Work is reviewed through reports, security logs, direct observation, incident documentation, and overall effectiveness in carrying out assigned responsibilities. Errors in judgment or performance may result in security vulnerabilities, disruption of City operations, injury to employees or citizens, damage to public property, or potential liability to the City.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
This position does not supervise any other positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provides a visible police and security presence throughout the Jonesboro City Center campus.

Conducts routine foot patrols of City facilities, parking lots, public areas, and surrounding grounds.

Monitors entry points and access to secure areas within Administrative Offices, Municipal Court, and Police Department facilities.

Screens and assists visitors entering City facilities and directs individuals to appropriate offices or services.

Responds to alarms, suspicious activities, disturbances, and security-related incidents.

Maintains order and security during Municipal Court proceedings, City Council meetings, public hearings, and community events held at City facilities.

Investigates incidents occurring on City property and prepares reports documenting findings and actions taken.

Responds to emergency situations, including medical emergencies, fire alarms, evacuations, and threats to public safety.

Assist employees, elected officials, court personnel, contractors, and visitors with safety and security concerns.

Coordinates with patrol officers and emergency responders when additional law enforcement resources are required.

Monitors security camera systems and other security-related equipment as assigned.

Performs opening and closing security inspections of City facilities.

Conducts security escorts as needed for employees, visitors, or contractors.

Enforces applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, policies, and regulations.

Maintains records, daily activity logs, and complete incident reports.

Participates in required training and professional development activities.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee works mostly indoors. Work involves recurring exposure to potentially dangerous situations involving law offenders and the use of firearms which could result in injury or possible loss of life. There is also pressure to know a vast amount of information to make split-second decisions when handling these dangerous situations.
