Job Summary
The Custodian II maintains a clean and safe school environment by cleaning building interiors dusting assigned areas and washing windows, doors, and ceramic tile on a daily basis. The custodian reports to the supervisor of operations/principal.
Essential Functions
Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and areas neat and clean at all times.
Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
Sweeps, vacuums or dust mops classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
Cleans corridors after school each day.
Scrubs and cleans toilets including mirrors, wash basins, urinals and commodes.
Fills tissue, towel and soap dispensers daily.
Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition.
Cleans all chalkboards at least once a week.
Moves furniture or equipment within building as required for various activities and as directed by the principal or lead custodian.
Strips, seals, waxes and buffs floors.
Shovels snow and spreads chemicals.
Helps unload delivery trucks at school.
Washes walls, ceilings, door glass, venetian blinds, light fixtures and replaces bulbs and tubes as needed.
Empties and washes garbage cans.
Assists in the development of a preventive maintenance program.
Performs other related duties as required.
Job Specification (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required)
Demonstrates an understanding of the job tasks.
Possesses thorough knowledge of the use of a variety of cleaning materials, supplies and equipment.
Demonstrates ability to move, transport, lift, and carry manually or with mechanical assistance boxes, books, supplies, equipment, and trash receptacles weighing up to 35 pounds.
Demonstrates strength and manual dexterity to operate snow removal or lawn mowing equipment or to shovel show manually.
Possesses thorough knowledge of building fixtures, mechanical systems and equipment, including low pressure heating plants.
Demonstrates the ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
Demonstrates the ability to instruct and train employees in building operations and care.
Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials and employees.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required.
Experience: Experience as a custodian, General knowledge and use of a variety of cleaning materials, supplies and equipment. General knowledge of building fixtures, mechanical systems and equipment.
License and Certification: Virginia Driver's License
