Upper School: Humanities Teacher
The Oakwood School seeks an energetic and creative Upper School Humanities Teacher. The ideal candidate will be responsible for teaching courses across both English and History, including 9th Grade Ancient and Medieval Literature, College Prep and Honors World History, and AP Human Geography. The successful candidate will have a strong background in the humanities, excellent communication skills, and a passion for helping students make meaningful connections across literature, history, culture, and the world around them.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Model and instill a love of literature, history, global awareness, and curiosity.
- Design and implement engaging instruction aligned with school standards, curriculum goals, and student needs.
- Teach two sections of 9th Grade Ancient and Medieval Literature, three sections of 10th Grade World History at the College Prep and Honors levels, and AP Human Geography.
- Create a positive classroom environment where students feel supported, challenged, and respected.
- Develop lessons that encourage critical thinking, discussion, research, writing, and analysis across the humanities.
- Help students make connections among literature, historical events, cultures, geography, and contemporary issues.
- Facilitate thoughtful classroom discussions that encourage students to examine texts, historical events, cultures, and global issues from multiple perspectives.
- Teach and reinforce close reading, analytical writing, research, presentation, and note-taking skills that support student success across disciplines.
- Utilize a variety of teaching practices and methodologies to support diverse learners.
- Integrate technology and digital resources to enhance instruction and student engagement.
- Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies to support all learners.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records and assessments.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies that support a productive and respectful learning environment.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with students and families built on trust, understanding, and open communication.
- Collaborate with English and History faculty and school leaders to support consistency across courses and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Participate in grade-level and division meetings, before and after-school duties, faculty meetings, Oakwood functions, clubs, athletic events, and other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English, history, humanities, education, or a related field.
- Prior teaching experience in Upper School English, history, humanities, or social sciences is preferred.
- Experience teaching or supporting Advanced Placement courses is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of literature, history, and the social sciences, with the ability to make meaningful connections across disciplines..
- Understanding of the social, emotional, and academic needs of Upper School students.
- The ability to differentiate instruction and create engaging learning opportunities for students with a wide range of abilities.
- A willingness to reflect on and refine teaching practices to support student growth.
- A desire to work in a diverse and inclusive school environment.
- A commitment to collaborate with colleagues and contribute positively to the school community.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when working with students, parents, and colleagues.
