Position Summary
The Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining manual and CNC lathes to produce precision metal or plastic components according to engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards. This position requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to workplace safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual and CNC lathe machines.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders.
- Select and install appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and machine attachments.
- Measure finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators.
- Inspect completed parts to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards.
- Make machine adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions or production issues.
- Maintain accurate production and quality records.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Keep the work area clean and organized.
- Assist with other machining or production duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience operating manual and CNC lathes preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Working knowledge of machining practices and precision measuring equipment.
- Basic mathematical skills, including fractions, decimals, and geometry.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CNC programming or editing.
- Experience using precision inspection equipment.
- Forklift or overhead crane experience (if applicable).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity to operate machinery and measuring instruments.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, oils, coolants, and metal shavings.
Work Environment
- Manufacturing or machine shop environment.
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear.
- May require overtime or weekend work based on production demands.
