Sales Assistant — Madison Truck Equipment, Inc.About the role
Madison Truck Equipment is hiring a Sales Assistant to support our sales team and keep orders moving accurately from the moment a deal closes to the day the truck goes out the door.
We've been building and servicing work trucks in Madison for over 60 years — snow plows, dump bodies, lift gates, hydraulic pumps, cranes, van bodies, ladder racks, safety lighting, PTO/pump combinations, and the accessories the construction, excavation, municipal, and service industries depend on.
Why this role exists
Our salespeople close deals. Somebody has to make sure the equipment actually gets ordered, the chassis actually gets picked up, and the invoice actually goes out with the right VIN, the right PO number, and the right dollar amount. That's this job. It isn't glamorous, but when it's done well nothing falls through the cracks, and when it isn't, everybody feels it — the customer, the shop, and the front office.
We're a small company, and everyone here pitches in outside their title. Some days that means you're at the computer entering an order. Some days it means helping move freight or covering the parts counter while somebody's at lunch. We'll train you on anything you haven't done before, including equipment operation. If that variety sounds good to you, keep reading.
Where it can go
This is a support role today, but it's also the best seat in the house for learning this business. You'll see every order come through, you'll learn the product line from the inside, and you'll start generating quotes as you pick it up. For the right person, this is a path into a sales role here. Several of the people who know this trade best started by learning it one order at a time.
What you'd do
- Order equipment from our vendors once a salesperson has sold it
- Arrange pickup and delivery of sold truck chassis
- Send accurate sales invoices — correct VIN, correct purchase order number, correct customer address, correct dollar amounts, every time
- Track what equipment we have on hand and available to sell
- Help out at the parts counter selling plow parts, PTOs, pumps, and related components
- Support shipping and receiving as needed — we'll train and certify you on our equipment
- Learn the product line and start building customer quotes as your knowledge grows
- Keep clean notes on open orders so nothing gets lost
Is this you?
- You catch your own mistakes. A transposed VIN or a wrong PO number bothers you before anyone else notices it
- You're comfortable switching between the computer, the phone, the counter, and the shop floor in the same day
- You like variety and don't need a job description that stays inside its lines
- You take notes and you keep them
- You're comfortable with numbers — invoice totals, part pricing, quantities
- You want to learn a trade, not just hold a job
- You'd rather be useful in five ways than perfect in one
What we're looking for
- Strong attention to detail, especially with numbers and documents
- Comfortable on phone, email, and computer for a good part of the day
- Willing to work in a shop environment and help with hands-on tasks — no prior experience required, we train
- Prior experience in order entry, purchasing, parts, shipping/receiving, customer service, or a truck/equipment dealership is a strong plus
- Curiosity about how work trucks are built and equipped — you'll pick up product knowledge over time, and your second year will be a lot easier than your first
What we offer
- $21–26/hour to start, based on experience, with raises tied to growing capability
- A real path into sales for someone who learns the products and wants it
- Paid bi-weekly
- All federal holidays paid
- Paid personal time, PTO, and sick time after one year
- $200 safety boot allowance every 2 years
- Uniforms provided after 90-day probationary period
