Position Summary:
The Lead Teacher is responsible for managing a classroom of children in accordance with regulations set by the Virginia Department of Education. This role ensures a safe, developmentally appropriate, and nurturing environment while maintaining compliance with all state licensing standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with Virginia early learning standards
- Ensure compliance with all child care licensing regulations, including staff-to-child ratios and supervision requirements
- Maintain a safe, clean, and healthy classroom environment following sanitation and safety guidelines
- Supervise children at all times, including during meals, naps, and outdoor play
- Complete required daily records (attendance, incident reports, medication logs, etc.)
- Observe and document children’s development in accordance with state guidelines
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about their child’s progress and daily activities
- Lead and supervise assistant teachers, ensuring adherence to licensing standards
- Participate in required training and professional development hours annually
- Implement positive behavior management strategies consistent with state regulations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must meet one of the following (per Virginia child care licensing standards):
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential OR
- Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience as recognized by the state
- Minimum of 6 months–2 years experience working with children in a licensed child care setting (program-dependent)
