Overview:
The Virtual Construction Lab (VCL) is looking for a Frontend Software Developer with strong experience in 3D graphics and visualization to join our engineering team. This role focuses on building interactive 3D web applications, visualization tools, and user interfaces used in engineering and design workflows. You will focus on creating performant, scalable, and intuitive frontend solutions for rendering, interacting with, and manipulating 3D data. We are a diverse team of around 25 people with backgrounds in design, engineering, programming, and UI/UX and function as an innovation lab for Schüco, a globally renowned façade system designer headquartered in Germany.
As a cross-disciplinary team, VCL researches and develops tools that aid Schüco and its partners in the design, construction, management, installation, and maintenance of facade projects around the world. The tasks of a VCL developer are varied bringing an enthusiastic drive to learn and innovate. Work will vary from project to project, including but not limited to:
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop interactive 3D web applications
- Implement 3D rendering solutions using modern web graphics frameworks
- Develop and optimize geometry visualization and interaction logic (meshes, transformations, coordinate systems)
- Integrate 3D components into modern frontend applications
- Work with CAD/engineering data formats (e.g., IFC, OBJ, GLTF) from a visualization perspective
- Optimize performance for real-time rendering and large datasets
- Collaborate with UI/UX designers to deliver intuitive and responsive 3D user experiences
- Ensure code quality through testing, reviews, and documentation
Required Qualifications:
- Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript
- Hands-on experience with 3D graphics libraries such as Three.js and WebGL
- Solid understanding of 3D math concepts (vectors, matrices, transformations)
- Experience building interactive web applications
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Experience building production-grade 3D applications handling large-scale datasets (100k+ objects, complex assemblies, or real-time engineering models)
- Experience working with structured engineering or parametric data models (BIM, CAD, or similar)
- Experience implementing advanced user interactions (selection, snapping, transformations, constraints)
- Experience integrating 3D visualization layers with backend services and APIs
- Exceptional communication skills between teammates and clients
- Legal authorization to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Angular or similar frontend frameworks
- Knowledge of 3D file formats (IFC, OBJ, GLTF)
- Experience with CAD-related visualization workflows
- Experience with real-time rendering performance optimization
- English fluency is required, German proficiency is not required but is highly desirable
Nice to Have:
- Experience with shader programming (GLSL)
- Knowledge of parametric modeling or geometry processing concepts
- Exposure to game engines (Unity, Unreal Engine)
- Experience working with large-scale engineering or architectural visualization systems
