GENERALIST COUNSELOR
ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:
The Principal appoints the Generalist Counselor and serves under the direct supervision of the Director of Counseling. The Generalist Counselor is responsible for promoting students' social, emotional, academic, post-secondary, and personal growth according to the mission and philosophy of Notre Dame College Prep.
EXPECTATIONS:
- 7:30 am to 3:15 pm – 10.5 months per year, other hours as needed to fulfill accountabilities
- Counselors are expected to work one week before the beginning of school and one week following the completion of school, as well as over the Christmas break, as needed to prepare for the second semester and additional time over the summer.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Specific accountabilities shall include, but not be limited to:
- Knowledge of the mission and philosophy of Notre Dame College Prep and support in incorporating and communicating its vision.
- Respond to student needs through meeting regularly with assigned students.
- Assist students in dealing with personal academic issues.
- Make referrals to appropriate internal or external sources.
- Guide student course selection and the registration process.
- Coordinates and/or delivers a comprehensive developmental counseling curriculum to support all students' academic, personal, social, and career development.
- Collects, interprets, and analyzes student-related data for program development, individual student planning, and career development.
- Provide leadership in assisting faculty and staff in responding to identified needs.
- Monitor students placed on academic contracts and/or facing eligibility concerns.
- Make recommendations regarding the placement of students.
- Conduct staffings involving faculty, parents, and students.
- Assist the Dean of Students regarding disciplinary issues.
- Serve as a resource regarding college and career decisions.
- Work collaboratively within the department to establish departmental goals and objectives.
- Participate in departmental staffing and meetings.
- Work cooperatively with administration, faculty, and staff in developing the total educational program (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual) available to students attending Notre Dame College Prep.
- Use conventional practices to document student, parent, and faculty interactions, phone calls, and meetings.
- Maintain open communication within the department and school regarding specific issues involving students, parents, staff, and/or the community.
- Support the Director of College and Career Counseling in transitioning students to post-secondary opportunities.
- Support and provide leadership in developing education and prevention regarding alcohol and drug use.
- Continue professional self-development and foster professional development within the department.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be fingerprinted and complete all Archdiocese of Chicago youth protection criteria and expectations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree, excellent communication skills, an energetic and outgoing personality, strong administrative/organizational skills, and familiarity with Google applications and basic computing are essential.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Master's degree, experience in secondary education, and experience in a Catholic school setting are preferred. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include but are not limited to understanding the developmental, learning, social justice, and multiculturalism counseling theories as well as career counseling theories; knowledge and understanding of the ASCA National Model; knowledge of data-driven school counseling practices; knowledge of consultation and the coordination of school resources in student advocacy; knowledge of the continuum of mental health services, including prevention and intervention strategies; and skills to understand and evaluate ethical dilemmas involving school counseling services.
Physical Working Conditions:
Must be able to lift lightweight objects (1 to 10 pounds) without repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average-weight objects (10 to 20 pounds). Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
