Job Summary
The Substation Engineer will be responsible for the coordination and execution of engineering for MV and HV Air/Gas Insulated Substation projects, including modifications and upgrades to existing substations in the 34.5 kV–550 kV range. The role involves performing standard electrical engineering calculations, supporting design development, and applying established engineering techniques and procedures as part of a substation engineering team serving utility customers focused on delivering reliable and efficient power systems.
Key Responsibilities
· Coordinate and execute engineering for substation projects, including new builds, modifications, and upgrades.
· Perform standard electrical engineering calculations and basic design tasks using established methods.
· Participate as part of a substation engineering team supporting utility clients in power delivery, reliability, and system performance.
· Attend pre-engineering and pre-construction meetings at client substations across the United States.
· Apply knowledge of NESC and NEC standards in engineering design and execution.
· Develop engineering designs in the following areas:
o Substation/switchyard general arrangements, layouts, and elevations
o Grounding studies and system design (WinIGS, CDEGS, etc.)
o Equipment selection and vendor drawing/specification review
o Equipment documentation review
o Auxiliary AC and DC power systems
o Raceway, trench, and conduit design
o Bill of Materials (BOM) development
o Lightning protection analysis and design
o Illumination design
o Relay drawings, including panel arrangements, single-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams
o Review and modification of existing drawings based on customer requirements and standards
o Familiarity with SEL, GE Relays, etc.
· Produce design and detail drawings using 2D/3D CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor or MicroStation/Bentley 3D.
· Support project execution by managing assigned engineering work in alignment with project schedules, emphasizing on-time delivery, quality, cost control, and safety.
· Follow company’s and client’s quality processes and document control procedures to ensure accuracy and completeness of deliverables.
· Identify and report any engineering issues that may impact safety, reliability, quality, cost, or schedule, and provide recommendations for resolution.
Basic Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
· Minimum of 2 years of experience as a substation engineer, or 4 or more years of experience in electrical engineering.
· Minimum of two (2) years of experience in design drawings using 2D/3D AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent CAD software.
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.
· EIT certification.
Additional Requirements
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
· Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% within the United States.
· PE license is a plus.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
