Job Summary
Assists the Director with overall administrative support and on-going processes of the Victim – Witness Program. Performs crisis intervention, advocacy, and case management duties for victims of crime. Reports to the Director – Victim Witness Program, in collaboration with the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Positions in the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office are appointed by the Commonwealth’s Attorney and serve at the pleasure of the Shenandoah County Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Coordinates victim-witness assistance efforts with Police Department, Commonwealth's Attorney, Probation and Parole Department, Social Services, and other agencies.

Educates victims and witnesses regarding trial procedures and practices, including advance visits, attorney introductions, information about testifying in open court, and available support.

Attends meetings and court proceedings with victims and witnesses including trials that involve civilian witnesses, children, or as requested.

Follows-up with victims post disposition including explaining outcomes, follow-up processes, and available support services.

Provides criminal justice process and victims’ rights information.

Sends correspondence to victims at various stages of the criminal justice process.

Assists victims in the preparation of Victim Impact Statements and with claims to the Virginia Victims Fund.

Enters and maintains accurate client and program records.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and work experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice or a related field.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment and techniques.

Knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic.

Knowledge of the organization and functions of the department and of general administrative policies and practices.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs for the purposes of creating and formatting documents, graphs, presentations, databases and spreadsheets.

Skill in assisting victims and witnesses, including acting in crisis situations.

Skill in understanding and interpreting statutes that apply to victims and witnesses of crime.

Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing in a highly interactive team-oriented work environment.

Ability to learn and be familiar with the Crime Victims and Witnesses Rights Act and the Victims’ Rights Amendments to the Constitution of Virginia.

Ability to learn and be familiar with Commonwealth of Virginia Criminal Justice system.

Ability to learn and be familiar with state and federal law concerning crime victims.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to personally relate to a wide variety of victims that are required to testify in court.

Ability to keep office records and to prepare accurate reports from file sources.

Ability to perform and work independently.

Ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine office management details without referral to supervisor.

The anticipated annual starting pay for this FLSA non-exempt position is $40,000.00-$45,800.00, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
