The Engineering Configuration and Component Engineer is a technical engineering role responsible for maintaining product configuration integrity, component engineering data, bills of materials, engineering change implementation, and design-transfer readiness across Patton’s product lifecycle. This position works inside the Engineering department and supports electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and compliance activities from product concept through production release. The role also includes technically evaluating, normalizing, and integrating designs, BOMs, drawings, component data, and manufacturing artifacts from acquired companies and customers into Patton’s engineering, PLM, ERP, and ECAD environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
- Own and improve Patton’s PLM environment as an engineering data system, ensuring accurate part records, BOM structures, revision history, drawings, specifications, approved manufacturer data, and product configuration baselines are reliable and usable by Engineering and Manufacturing.
-
Manage the import, technical review, organization, and lifecycle tracking of engineering artifacts, including schematics, PCB data, mechanical drawings, firmware references, test procedures, BOMs, manufacturing work instructions, compliance files, and supplier component information.
-
Provide user support, training, and process improvements to enhance PLM adoption and efficiency.
Component Engineering & Qualification:
-
Maintain component data and workflows in the ERP and PLM systems.
-
Create, validate, release, and maintain engineering and manufacturing Bills of Materials, including part-number structure, revision alignment, approved alternates, approved manufacturers, sourcing constraints, and manufacturability impacts.
-
Identify, evaluate, and qualify alternate components by comparing electrical, mechanical, environmental, lifecycle, compliance, cost, sourcing, and manufacturability requirements against the approved design intent.
-
Support selection of critical components for new designs and cost reduction in existing ones.
-
Monitor and manage component obsolescence and compliance (RoHS, REACH, conflict minerals).
Document Control & Configuration Management:
-
Control the creation, revision, approval, release, and distribution of engineering and manufacturing documents that define the product configuration, including drawings, BOMs, specifications, work instructions, test procedures, and compliance artifacts.
-
Ensure manufacturing documentation and artifacts are provided according to latest approved configuration.
-
Ensure documentation aligns with internal standards and external requirements.
-
Serve as the Engineering owner for change-control implementation, coordinating ECOs, part changes, BOM updates, drawing revisions, production documentation, ERP and PLM updates, and cross-functional release readiness so approved changes are correctly implemented across Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, and Compliance.
-
Support the definition and continuous improvement of respective engineering processes.
Regulatory Compliance:
-
Work in cooperation with Patton’s Senior Manager for Quality and Compliance to ensure products meet regulatory standards (UL, CE, RoHS, REACH, etc.).
-
Prepare and maintain documentation for regulatory submissions and audits.
-
Coordinate with third-party labs for compliance testing and certification.
Support of Acquisition and Third-Party Artifacts Integration:
-
Lead the technical ingestion of designs and documentation from acquired companies and customers.
-
Standardize and import external design data into Patton’s PLM, ERP, ECAD, and documentation systems.
-
Ensure compliance with Patton’s engineering standards and processes during integration.
-
Collaborate cross-functionally to resolve compatibility, quality, and documentation issues.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
-
5+ years of experience in engineering, component engineering, configuration management, manufacturing engineering, product development support, or design-transfer activities for electronic or electro-mechanical products.
-
Experience using PLM and ERP systems to manage engineering parts, BOMs, revision-controlled drawings, ECOs, approved manufacturer lists, component attributes, lifecycle status, and product configuration records; Aras and/or Infor PLM preferred.
