MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED. Must be able to obtain Texas CDL-B within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to obtain a Texas “D” Water Distribution and Texas Collections I Certification within one (1) year from date of hire, and must be able to obtain a Texas "C" Water Distribution Certification within three (3) years from date of hire.
A minimum of six (6) months experience in performing construction work requiring the use of equipment similar to or the same as assigned to this position.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of repair methods used in water distribution/wastewater collection systems; knowledge of applicable safety procedures and practices.
SKILLS:
Skill to communicate orally; skill in performing work requiring strength and agility in all weather conditions; skill in lifting heavy objects; skill in preventative and minor maintenance repair on tools and equipment; skill in operating the assigned equipment; skill in using hand tools to perform manual labor tasks.
ABILITIES:
Ability to follow oral directions; ability to identify and correct potential safety hazards; ability to manipulate things with the hands; ability to coordinate hand and foot movements; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time; ability to lift, push, and load/unload heavy objects; ability to regularly lift objects approximately fifty (50) to 120 pounds.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above required knowledges, skills, and abilities is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Works effectively with other employees to repair or replace water or sewer service lines, water or sewer mains; makes water and sewer taps; unstops sewer lines; installs two-way clean-outs in sewer service lines; sets up barricades when required to protect employees and the public; performs routine maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment; sorts various materials; reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instruction (English); uses good judgement to work safely and use equipment properly; hear clearly when working around equipment or in street and alley traffic, using proper safety precautions; lifts and carries up to fifty (50) pounds, and pulls, pushes, or drags up to 120 pounds of installation and repair equipment or materials; climbs, crawls, kneels, squats, twists, bends, and stoops for extended periods of time while performing installations and repairs; works in trenches and confined spaces; works indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather; some exposure to mechanical, electrical, explosive, fume, odor, dust, chemical, and toxic waste hazards. Hears and sees clearly when working in and around traffic while using proper safety precautions. Communicates effectively with the public and other City employees.
