Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Designer for Automotive Shipping Racking to join our engineering team. This position is responsible for designing and developing custom automotive shipping racks used by OEM customers.
The ideal candidate has strong SolidWorks 3D modeling and design experience, understands automotive manufacturing and fabrication processes, and can translate customer requirements, drawings, and specifications into practical, production-ready designs. Experience with Siemens NX is a major asset, particularly for working with OEM customer data and CAD models.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop automotive shipping racks using SolidWorks.
- Interpret OEM customer drawings, specifications, CAD data, and packaging requirements.
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings.
- Develop accurate manufacturing drawings including dimensions, tolerances, weld symbols, materials, and finishing requirements.
- Design racks for efficient loading, unloading, transportation, storage, and handling of automotive components.
- Work with engineering, manufacturing, welding, purchasing, and production teams to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective to manufacture.
- Review designs for structural integrity, functionality, manufacturability, and ease of assembly.
- Modify and improve existing rack designs based on customer feedback, production requirements, or cost-reduction opportunities.
- Incorporate customer-specific requirements and ensure designs meet OEM standards and specifications.
- Work with customer CAD data and integrate components into rack assemblies.
- Participate in design reviews and resolve design or manufacturing issues.
- Support prototype development, testing, and production launch.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation and revision control.
- Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal teams throughout the design process.
- Assist with continuous improvement initiatives involving rack design, material usage, manufacturing efficiency, and cost reduction.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, automotive packaging, material handling equipment, or shipping rack design.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including:
- 3D part modeling
- Complex assemblies
- Metal and structural components
- Detailed manufacturing drawings
- Design revisions
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes, particularly welding, steel fabrication, machining, and assembly.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet customer deadlines.
