<Job Overview>
Oakland School, a private day school located on 450 acres in Troy, Virginia, seeks an experienced and innovative Equine Program Manager to help lead and grow our equine program. This role combines equine program development, herd and barn management and student instruction to create meaningful learning experiences for students with diverse learning profiles.
The Equine Program Manager will co-create and implement a program that uses horsemanship, barn responsibilities, and equine-assisted learning to develop executive functioning skills, confidence, responsibility, communication, and self-awareness in students. This role is both management and hands-on, requiring daily engagement with students, horses, staff, and school leadership.
<Responsibilities>
- Manage barn operations, including scheduling, facility maintenance, inventory, safety protocols, and documentation.
- Coordinate with veterinarians, farriers, trainers, and other equine professionals.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for students, staff, visitors, and horses.
- Design and facilitate equine-based learning experiences that promote executive functioning, responsibility, self-regulation, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
- Teach students horse care, barn management, horsemanship, safety, teamwork, and life skills through hands-on learning.
- Oversee all aspects of herd health, feeding, turnout, grooming, and daily horse care.
- Collaborate with faculty and school leadership to integrate equine experiences into broader student learning and growth.
- Support special events, community engagement activities, and program development initiatives.
<Qualifications>
- Significant experience in horse care, herd management, and barn operations.
- Experience teaching riding, horsemanship, equine-assisted learning, or youth development programs.
- Strong understanding of horse behavior, equine safety, and facility management.
- Experience working with children and adolescents.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a school environment.
- Commitment to student growth, animal welfare, and safety.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and perform physically demanding barn and farm management tasks
Pay: Up to $55,000.00 per year
