Safely operate an automatic, semi-automatic side-loading refuse truck with a hydraulic device or a rear-loading refuse vehicle to collect solid waste, trash, brush, large bulk items, or recycled materials from residential customers and transport materials to designated disposal area. Operate an automatic side-loading refuse truck as the primary vehicle with the potential to operate a semi-automatic side-loading or rear-loading refuse vehicle as a secondary vehicle should the need arise. Ensure that the truck is operational including fueling the assigned vehicle, daily washing, cleaning, performing routine maintenance such as greasing, and conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections (checking fluid levels, tire pressure, filters, belts, etc.) Completing and maintaining daily written records and logs on mileage, fuel consumption, and necessary written repairs. Ability to follow standard safety precautions during the operation of the vehicle or equipment. Must be able to operate assigned vehicle in tight or confined locations in the presence of other vehicles and pedestrians.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations; hazards of operation and appropriate safety rules and regulations; and skill operating an automatic side-loading, semi- automatic side-loading, or rear-loading refuse truck under all road and weather conditions.

Ability to complete and maintain written records and logs; lift a minimum of 50 pounds and withstand long periods of sitting; maneuver large refuse vehicles through heavy traffic and narrow openings and in the presence of other vehicles, stationary property, and pedestrians; and understand and carry out oral and written instruction and work independently to perform regular duties.

Able to use city-issued computers or cell devices, routing software/maps, shovels, rakes, and/or brooms.

One year of experience driving large, heavy trucks, and experience in solid waste operations preferred.

An equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.
Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid Florida Class B driver's license with air-brake endorsement and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.

Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified through a screening process administered by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
