We are seeking an experienced Fire Sprinkler System Designer to join our Knoxville, TN based engineering and design team.

We are looking for a highly qualified designer who pays attention to detail, actively listens, communicates professionally and collaborates effectively with coworkers, contractors, engineers and AHJ. The position is responsible for designed code-compliant fire sprinkler systems – preparing complete shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, submittal packages and following through with the review to approval process.
What You Will Do:- Design fire sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA standards, project specifications, local requirements and AHJ requirements.- Systems include:
o Wet-pipe and dry-pipe sprinkler systems; Preaction sprinkler systems; Standpipe systems; Fire pump systems and Underground fire service systems
o Review architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and reflected ceiling plans to evaluate occupancy classifications, hazard classifications, commodity classifications, storage arrangements, ceiling conditions, obstructions, and available water supplies.
o Coordinate sprinkler layouts and piping with ceilings, lighting, ductwork, structural members, equipment, and other building systems.
o Determine appropriate sprinkler types, temperature ratings, spacing, pipe sizing, system configurations, and design criteria.
o Perform hydraulic calculations and verify water supply adequacy, hose allowances, system demand, elevation changes, friction loss, and required safety margins.
o Develop complete submittal packages for review and approval by architects, engineers, general contractors, owners, insurance representatives, and authorities having jurisdiction.
o Prepare material lists, stock lists, fabrication information, and supporting documentation.
o Support project managers and field teams by answering technical questions and resolving design or installation conflicts.
o Review field changes and update drawings to reflect approved modifications.
o Assist in preparing as-built and record drawings.
o Maintain organized and accurate project files, calculations, correspondence, and design records.
o Meet project schedules while maintaining the company’s quality and accuracy standards.
o Participate in internal quality-control reviews and peer reviews.
Required Qualifications
● NICET certification
● Working knowledge of NFPA 13 and related fire protection standards.
● Experience preparing fire sprinkler shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, and submittal packages.
● Understanding of wet-pipe, dry-pipe, and preaction fire sprinkler systems.
● Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil construction drawings.
● Understanding of sprinkler spacing, obstruction requirements, hazard classifications, system design criteria, pipe sizing, and hydraulic calculation principles.
● Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with architects, engineers, general contractors, project managers, field personnel, and authorities having jurisdiction.
● Strong attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skills.
● Ability to actively listen, receive feedback, and incorporate project requirements accurately.
● Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
● Ability to work independently while remaining collaborative and responsive to the broader project team.
● Proficiency with AutoCAD or comparable computer-aided design software.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience with SprinkCAD and HASS hydraulic calculation software.
● NICET certification in Water-Based Systems Layout.
● Working knowledge of NFPA 13R, NFPA 13D, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, NFPA 24, and NFPA 25. Experience with FM Global standards.
● Experience with Revit, AutoSPRINK, Navisworks, or BIM coordination.
● Experience designing fire sprinkler systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, educational, multifamily, warehouse, or storage occupancies.
● Experience with fire pumps, standpipes, underground fire mains, rack sprinklers, and storage applications.
● Knowledge of clean-agent systems and special-hazard fire suppression systems.
