Join our dedicated team as a Shelter Kennel Assistant and play a vital role in providing compassionate care and support for animals in our shelter. This energetic position offers the opportunity to work closely with cats and dogs, ensuring their well-being, cleanliness, and safety while assisting with daily kennel operations. Your enthusiasm and animal handling skills will help create a welcoming environment for both animals and visitors, making a positive impact on their lives every day. This can be a loud, physically strenuous and emotionally exhausting job. All interviews will be working interviews.
Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kennels, cages, cat rooms and common areas to promote a healthy environment for animals.
- Handle dogs safely using proper animal restraint techniques to prevent injury and reduce stress.
- Assist with dog training activities to encourage good behavior and socialization.
- Provide pet grooming such as bathing, brushing, and basic hygiene care to keep animals comfortable and healthy.
- Support staff with animal handling during medical examinations, vaccinations or treatments, including administering medications.
- Engage with animals through training and play to promote mental stimulation and reduce anxiety.
- Offer excellent customer service by answering visitor questions, providing information about adoptable animals, and guiding potential adopters through the adoption process.
- Perform heavy lifting when necessary to move supplies, clean equipment, or assist in kennel setup. (Up to 50lbs)
Requirements
- Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Willing to work all holidays.
- Reliable transportation.
- Knowledge of dog training techniques and animal handling skills to ensure safe interactions is a plus. Experience working as a kennel assistant is highly desirable.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including heavy lifting, scrubbing kennels and standing for extended periods of time.
- Strong understanding of pet care, animal restraint, and general animal behavior.
- Excellent communication skills with a friendly attitude towards donors, potential adopters, volunteers and team members.
