Contract · Project‑Based · Flexible · Remote
Pay: $40–$65/hr
Hours: 1–15/week (as needed)
Job Overview
Maison Robert is seeking an Antique Clockmaker / Horologist for precision, project‑based bench work. This role involves the diagnosis, overhaul, and preservation of antique mechanical clock movements. Work is completed in your own shop, with your own tools, on a flexible schedule — provided the craftsmanship meets our standards of accuracy and preservation.
This is fine‑mechanism restoration, not general mechanical repair.
Not automotive. Not diesel. Not industrial maintenance.
We work methodically, with intention, and without shortcuts. If that aligns with how you approach your bench, you will fit well with us.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose mechanical issues in antique clock movements
- Disassemble, service, and reassemble movements at your bench
- Perform proper cleaning, lubrication, and mechanical correction
- Execute bushing work, pivot polishing, and escapement adjustment
- Align and test strike and chime sequencing
- Document work clearly and communicate project status
- Handle heritage pieces with respect for original design and materials
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience repairing mechanical clocks (not watches)
- Competence with movement teardown, cleaning, and reassembly
- Ability to diagnose issues in time, strike, and chime trains
- Familiarity with American and European antique movements
- Own appropriate tools for clock repair (ultrasonic cleaner a plus)
- Methodical, disciplined work habits — no guesswork, no shortcuts
- Reliable communication and respect for preservation principles
Work Environment
- Remote / your own shop or bench
- Project‑based (no guaranteed hours)
- Flexible scheduling
- Ideal for precision‑minded craftspeople who prefer quiet, focused work
