JOB DESCRIPTION | Receptionist/Optometry Technician
Summary: Provides general office support with a variety of clerical activities and related tasks.
The receptionist/optometry technician will be responsible for answering incoming calls, directing calls to appropriate associates, mail distribution, and requisition of office and contact lens supplies as well as additional clerical duties. Other duties include charting on patient EHRs and conducting preliminary examination of patients prior to their evaluation by the physician. They are responsible for checking patient’s benefits and eligibility with their insurance for routine eye exams, dilation, and medical office visits for eye infections and injuries. While maintaining the front desk responsibilities, employees will also be in charge of contact lens fittings and education with patients of all ages. Each responsibility will be taught thoroughly through training. The duration of training depends on the employee and the rate of how quickly they can absorb the information. Training is both hands-on and verbal knowledge while working with the doctor, office manager, and the rest of the staff.
Receptionist/optometry technicians' interface with patients and doctors. They answer phone calls, schedule appointments, maintain charts and greet patients. The receptionist is also responsible for regular office duties such as cleaning, restocking supplies, and maintaining office equipment. Other duties include preliminary testing patient vision, maintaining contact lens supplies, teaching contact lens care and use, and authorizing insurance and billing.
Essential Functions
1. Answers telephone calls and directs them to the appropriate associate. Will transfer a caller an associate’s voice mailbox when the associate is unavailable.
2. Greets and directs patients to the office.
3. Takes and retrieves messages for various personnel.
4. Provides callers with information such as company address, directions to the company location, company fax numbers, company website and other related information.
5. Receives, sorts, and forward incoming mail. Maintains and routes publications.
6. Assists with patient interaction in preliminary screenings, contact lens fittings and education.
7. Assists in ordering, receiving, stocking and distribution of office and contact lens supplies.
8. Assists with other related clerical duties such as photocopying, faxing, filing, and collating.
9. Interact with patients in a courteous manner.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopies, filing cabinets and fax machines. We will routinely use the autorefaction/keratometer machine, tonometer, and auto lens autometer. We maintain the supply of contact lens trials and contact lens solution on a daily basis.
Our office has zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct between coworkers and patients. We ask that employees maintain a professional attitude in order to encourage a positive work environment.
Pay
Pay will be discussed and can be negotiated with the office manager.
Physical Demands
This job will require the ability to handle files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary to carry or move at least 5-10 pounds.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position.
Days and hours of work need are M-F, 9 AM to 5 PM and/or Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM

Required Education and Experience
1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
2. Customer service experience
Preferred Education and Experience
1. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
2. One or more years of healthcare related experience
3. HIPPA Certification
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
A strong interest in the medical and/or optometric field. Passion to help and interact with patients along with others around them. An innate responsibility to be productive.
