POSITION SUMMARY:
The Nurse Manager is responsible for directing patient care in the behavioral healthcare setting. This role involves consulting with staff and physicians on nursing matters and interpretation of facility policies to ensure patient needs are met. The Nurse Manager provides nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, treatment plans, and therapeutic treatments. The position requires knowledge of a wide range of disorders, including cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral, as well as crisis intervention skills. The Nurse Manager also oversees performance improvement activities within the department and participates in QAPI activities, manages the scheduling function for the Nursing Department, and assists leadership in formulating the budget.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing or a graduate of an accredited university with a bachelor's degree in nursing (preferred).
- Management experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.
AGE OF PATIENTS SERVED AND AGE-SPECIFIC TECHNOLOGY:
- Adult Population: Age 18 and up
Sufficient knowledge of growth and development to facilitate patients through the Developmental Tasks of Young Adulthood, Middle Adulthood, and Late Adulthood.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties listed below describe the general nature and level of work performed by the Nurse Manager. Additional responsibilities may be assigned to meet the needs of Brightwell.
- Assumes responsibility, in cooperation with nursing leadership, for the administration of nursing services.
- Serves as a role model for quality clinical care.
- Participates in developing, interpreting, and implementing Brightwell's philosophy, objectives, standards, policies, and procedures.
- Participates in the budgeting process, maintaining a cost-effective, quality clinical program within Brightwell.
- Maintains clinical staffing patterns to ensure continuity of care and appropriate acuity levels.
- Reviews and approves the monthly nursing staff schedule.
- Coordinates the Performance Improvement Program for clinical services within Trillium.
- Strengthens the role of nursing within Brightwell's environment.
- Fosters an environment conducive to professional growth.
- Investigates unusual incidents and complaints from patients, personnel, and other departments, reporting findings to the DON.
- Makes rounds daily, as needed.
- Ensures a therapeutic milieu by maintaining patient rights, the nursing process, safety, and patient participation in care.
- Holds current BLS/CPR certification and is proficient in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
- Participates in staff development programs and the orientation of new employees, ensuring that nursing staff meet staff development expectations.
- Facilitates communication between departments to improve the quality of patient care.
- Takes after-hours calls for unit issues on a rotating schedule.
- Manages the clinical orientation of new staff nurses, including assigning preceptors and supporting new staff integration.
- Provides in-service presentations for the department regularly.
- Ensures completion of performance evaluations for nursing staff annually.
- Coaches and teaches staff to develop nursing skills, providing feedback and disciplinary actions as needed.
- Delegates duties as necessary to nursing management.
- Conducts regular nursing and milieu meetings.
- Performs additional duties as assigned, including assisting Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, LPNs, MHTs, and other staff as required.
