Assistant Controller

About the Opportunity
Our client, a well-established and mission-driven nonprofit organization with annual revenues exceeding $40 million, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join its finance leadership team. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while supporting a complex nonprofit accounting environment.
The Assistant Controller will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, audits, and internal controls. This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional with strong nonprofit accounting experience and a collaborative leadership style.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing the month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Oversee general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Support the annual audit and coordinate with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory reporting.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Monitor and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff while promoting process improvements.
- Support financial reporting to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial data and reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Required experience working for a nonprofit organization with annual revenues of $40 million or greater.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, fund accounting, and grant compliance.
- Experience managing audits and preparing financial statements.
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with federally funded grants and contracts.
- Prior experience in a multi-entity or complex nonprofit environment.
- Background overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
