SUMMARY Responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and fully operational environment across school and district facilities. Ensures that classrooms, offices, and shared spaces are consistently prepared to support student learning, staff productivity, and community use. Through routine cleaning, preventative maintenance, and responsive support for daily operations and special events, this role helps protect the health and safety of occupants, preserves district facilities, and contributes to a welcoming and well-functioning environment for all.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Sweep, mop, vacuum, and perform specialized floor care, including shampooing carpets and removing or reapplying floor finishes.
Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as desks, furniture, fixtures, weight equipment, toilets, sinks, and clinic cots.
Remove waste and recycling from all indoor and outdoor areas and restock soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
Sanitize tables, chairs, and floors promptly after meals, school events, or large gatherings to restore spaces to original condition.
Clean windows, doors, walls, and maintain the general cleanliness of the gym, bleachers, theater, and storage areas.
Set up and break down furniture and heavy equipment for school events, meetings, and extracurricular activities.
Secure the building nightly by physically locking all doors and ensuring the proper operation of all building safety and security systems (e.g. door locks, water shutoff/alarms).Troubleshoot routine equipment malfunctions independently, escalating complex repairs to Zone Maintenance and remaining on-site until assistance arrives.
Operate emergency shut-off and control valves and promptly report or address safety hazards and maintenance issues.
Maintain school grounds by operating landscaping equipment for mowing, trimming, fertilizing, and debris removal.
Perform seasonal maintenance, including the removal of snow and ice from walkways and entryways.
Monitor cleaning supply inventory and request replenishment to ensure no disruption in service.
Keep detailed logs of completed tasks and report any damages or necessary repairs to leadership.
Serve as a contact for effective communication with staff and external groups regarding facility needs, collaborate with facility manager or head custodian.
Place work orders and relay information or provide training/guidance to new hires in the absence of the Facility Manager or Head Custodian.
Perform physical labor and moving furniture or equipment as needed.

EXPERIENCE: No experience required. Prior custodial experience preferred.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS: None
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of basic computer, math, language, and writing skills. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, safety procedures, and custodial best practices related to housekeeping, sanitation, and the security of school buildings, grounds, and equipment. Skilled in operating custodial indoor and outdoor equipment within one year of hire. Skilled in communicating clearly and professionally while interacting daily with students, parents, staff, and the community. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment and quick action during emergencies without direct supervision. Ability to maintain strong attention to detail, reliability, and a consistently professional and helpful demeanor. Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance. Ability to work flexible hours as needed to support school site operations, and accept temporary reassignment of work locations or areas to meet operational needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Regularly stand, walk, climb ladders, crouch, bend, reach, and twist for the full work shift. Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects like furniture or trash bins weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to climb ladders carefully while maintaining good balance and coordination. Regularly scrub and mop surfaces using steady hand and arm movements. Frequent exposure to wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather, vibration, and risk of electrical shock. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals. Must be able to lead or direct students to safety in the event of an emergency or drill.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: Ability to process and follow all written or spoken rules for cleaning chemicals and school safety. Ability to calmly and effectively problem solve when addressing broken equipment, moving furniture, or using machinery. Ability to maintain a high level of care to ensure every room stays clean and tidy. Ability to adjust communication and body language to effectively and appropriately communicate with student based on age and emotional/cognitive development.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed in an occupied K-12 school building or district office building. Noise level moderate. Workspaces may include occupied/unoccupied classrooms, restrooms, mechanical/electrical rooms, storage areas, and building exteriors, including rooftops. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and heat. Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE), adhere to posted signage and safety protocols.
