POSITION: School NurseREPORTS TO: District Nursing Supervisor, Building PrincipalsCLASSIFICATION: Exempt (salary)SUPERVISES: Building Nurses (as directed by District Supervisor)PURPOSE: The School Nurse will assist the District Nursing Supervisor in providing specified health services, as assigned.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision or direction of the District Nursing Supervisor, the School Nurse will provide the following services as assigned:HEALTH APPRAISALImplement system for maintaining accurate student health records, immunization records, accident reports, and state and local reportsPerform vision and hearing screening tests, and consult in analyzing resultsConduct student growth surveysInterpret student screening/examination results, and counsel students, parents, and teachers regarding the sameDevelop/supervise procedures for dispensing medication to studentsAct as health education resource person to students, parents, and staff members as directed by District SupervisorConduct home visits, as necessary, for the effective management of student health problemsAssist District Supervisor in implementing staff development/training and scheduling appropriate resource personnel to meet assessed staff needsConfer with special education teachers and administrators who are responsible for handicapped students with special medical needsMISCELLANEOUS DUTIESCase manage 504 students with special health needsAt the elementary level, participate in acquiring appropriate medical information from parents during kindergarten registrationMonitor the conditions for a healthful school environmentContact individuals in connection with medical emergencies as needed: parents, Colchester Rescue, police, DCF, counseling agencies, etcAssist District Supervisor in maintaining accurate documentation of district-wide health servicesExhibit commitment to School Districts Vision PlanJob Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesDemonstrated skills and/or prior experience working in a pediatric settingExcellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skillsStrong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skillsTOOLS/TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS:Calculators or accessories, Desktop computers, Paper punching or binding machines, Facsimile machines, Photocopiers, Electronic mail software (Outlook), Word Processing Software (Microsoft), Calendar and Scheduling Software (Outlook), Spreadsheet Software (Excel), Scanners, Internet Browser Software, Presentation software (PowerPoint), Student Database Software (PowerSchool), and Business Collaboration Software (SharePoint) QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, in addition to the following:Current VT Professional Educators License with School Nurse endorsementCurrent Registered Nurse License Current standard American Heart Association CPR/AED certificationMinimum of three years experience working in a variety of health service settings, especially pediatric health carePHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:Must be able to move objects weighing up to 25 poundsMust be able to remain in a stationary position 95% of the timeMust be able to move around the office and school to access office machinery, assist students, attend meetings, greet visitors, etcAbility to effectively and efficiently operate under stressful situations including managing multiple priorities WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is normally performed in a climate-controlled, office environment, with very limited exposure to extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes, and gases. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of a normal office.
