Job Title: Preschool Music & Afterschool Teacher
Reports To: Head of Early Years
Job Type: Full-time (30-35 hours per week)
Job Overview
We are seeking a creative, energetic, and nurturing Preschool Music & Afterschool Teacher to join our team. This unique dual role is perfect for an educator who loves both the structured creativity of music education and the relaxed, engaging atmosphere of afternoon childcare.
In the morning/early afternoon, you will lead vibrant, age-appropriate music classes that introduce our youngest learners to rhythm, melody, and movement. In the late afternoon, you will transition into supporting our Afterschool Program—creating a safe, fun, and relaxing environment where students can wind down, play, and engage in enrichment activities.
Key Responsibilities1. Music Education Role
- Curriculum Design: Plan and implement a dynamic, play-based music curriculum for children aged 1 to 5 years old.
- Active Engagement: Introduce foundational music concepts through singing, rhythmic instruments (shakers, drums, triangles), fingerplays, and creative movement.
- Cultural Diversity: Incorporate a wide variety of musical genres, traditional songs, and multicultural music into daily lessons.
2. Afterschool Care Role
- Activity Planning: Create a balanced schedule of afternoon activities, including outdoor play, arts and crafts, storytime, and free-play centers.
- Safe Dismissal: Oversee the secure sign-out and pickup process, ensuring open and positive communication with parents at the end of the day.
3. General Classroom & Safety Duties
- Maintain a safe, clean, and highly organized classroom and music space.
- Utilize positive guidance and behavior management strategies that align with preschool policies.
- Supervise children closely during transitions, bathroom breaks, playground time, and snack times.
Qualifications & SkillsRequired:
- Experience: At least 1–2 years of experience working with preschool-aged children (2–5 years old) in a group setting.
- Musical Joy & Engagement: Ability to sing clearly, keep a steady beat, and enthusiastically lead young children in musical play, circle time, and action songs.
- Musical Accompaniment: Comfort playing a chord-based instrument (like the ukulele, guitar, or piano) to accompany singing is a huge plus! If you don't play an instrument, you should be skilled at using high-quality backing tracks alongside simple percussion (like shakers, drums, or rhythm sticks) to create a dynamic, interactive musical environment.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (Child Development Associate (CDA) or college coursework in Early Childhood Education/Music Education is a major plus).
- Certifications: Ability to pass a background check and obtain CPR/First Aid certification prior to hiring.
Soft Skills:
- High energy, patience, and a genuine love for working with early learners.
- Strong communication skills for building relationships with parents and co-workers.
- Flexibility to shift mindsets from a structured instructional class to a relaxed recreational environment.
