We're looking for an experienced commercial plumber who can read the plans, lay out the work, and run a job in the field without being babysat. This isn't an entry-level spot. You'll be the person on site who knows what goes where, keeps the crew moving, and makes sure the work passes inspection the first time.
What you'll do
- Read and interpret commercial blueprints, specs, and isometric drawings, and lay out the plumbing systems from them.
- Run the job in the field — set the daily plan, direct helpers and apprentices, and keep the crew productive and on schedule.
- Do material takeoffs from the plans; order, schedule, and stage material so the job isn't sitting around waiting on parts.
- Install commercial plumbing through all phases: underground, rough-in, top-out, and trim — water supply, sanitary and storm drainage, waste and vent, and gas piping.
- Install and connect fixtures, water heaters, pumps, backflow preventers, and related equipment.
- Join pipe across the materials and methods used on commercial work — copper (solder, braze, press), cast iron / no-hub, PVC and ABS, PEX, and threaded or grooved (Victaulic) steel.
- Install and pressure-test natural gas and fuel gas piping to code.
- Shoot and hold grade and slope on underground and drainage runs (laser level, transit).
- Coordinate with the other trades and the GC on layout, sleeves, and penetrations so the work fits and the inspections pass.
- Know and apply the North Carolina State Plumbing Code and any local amendments.
- Schedule and be on site for inspections; correct any deficiencies fast.
- Flag scope gaps and field changes early so they get written up as change orders instead of eaten by the company.
- Track progress against the schedule and report status to the PM or superintendent.
- Keep field documentation current — as-builts, daily logs, and material used.
- Keep the work area clean and safe, and follow OSHA and company safety practices.
What you need
- [5]+ years of commercial plumbing experience.
- Able to read commercial plans and specs and run the work off them with minimal oversight.
- Working knowledge of the NC State Plumbing Code and gas piping code.
- Proven ability to lead a crew and run a job from underground to trim.
- Solid across the commercial pipe materials and joining methods listed above.
- Shows up, owns the outcome, and holds the crew to the same standard.
Certifications and licenses
- OSHA certified (OSHA 30 preferred for anyone running a crew; OSHA 10 minimum).
- Valid NC driver's license and a clean enough driving record to operate a company vehicle.
- Plumbing license note: In North Carolina you can work under our company's contractor license, so you don't need to hold your own to apply. That said, a NC Plumbing Technician (PT) license — or progress toward one — is a strong plus and gets you more responsibility faster.
- Pluses: Medical gas certification and backflow tester certification if you've done that work; welding/brazing certs.
Physical and other requirements
- Able to lift 50+ lbs, work in trenches and confined spaces, on ladders and lifts, and in all weather.
- Own standard hand tools.
- Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
