Be the first impression of our organization while helping patients access care through exceptional customer service, accurate registration, insurance verification, and financial counseling support.
Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a friendly, detail-oriented, and customer-focused Patient Access / Registration Specialist to join our Patient Access team.
This position serves as a critical link between patients and healthcare services by greeting patients, answering phones, registering encounters, verifying insurance eligibility, collecting payments, and maintaining accurate patient information within the electronic health record. The Patient Access / Registration Specialist helps ensure a positive patient experience while supporting efficient clinic and hospital operations.
When assigned to the Emergency Department, this position works closely with the ED team to expedite patient care and improve patient outcomes. Employees assigned to the Emergency Department receive an additional $1.00 per hour premium pay.

May support hospital registration, clinic registration, and/or Emergency Department registration functions

Greet patients and visitors in a professional, courteous, and timely manner
-
Answer incoming phone calls and assist patients with questions and scheduling needs

Accurately register patients within the electronic health record
-
Collect, update, and verify patient demographics and insurance information
-
Ensure all required registration and consent documentation is completed

Maintain a welcoming and professional environment for patients and visitors

Verify insurance eligibility and coverage
-
Collect and accurately document insurance information
-
Collect and post patient co-payments and payments
-
Inform patients of financial assistance options and payment responsibilities

Assist with payment-related questions within scope of knowledge

Scan and maintain patient identification and insurance documentation
-
Ensure patient records are complete and accurate

Help prevent duplicate medical records through proper patient identification procedures

Support staff with registration-related EHR functions
-
Utilize Cerner and other electronic systems effectively

Educate patients regarding registration requirements and hospital processes

Assist patients with records requests and release forms

Provide information regarding clinic and hospital services

Direct questions to appropriate departments when necessary

Monitor incoming faxes and route appropriately

Complete opening and closing duties

Print schedules and support department workflow needs

Cross-train to perform Patient Experience Representative duties

Participate in staff meetings, training, and ongoing professional development

High school diploma or equivalent required
-
Minimum two (2) years of customer service experience strongly preferred
-
Prior healthcare experience preferred but not required
-
Electronic health record experience, especially Cerner, preferred but not required

Current AHA BLS (Heartsaver) certification required

Strong customer service and communication skills

Excellent attention to detail and accuracy

Proficient typing and computer skills

Base Compensation Range: $18.00 - $22.38 hourly, based on years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader.
- Premium Pay:
- Cross-Training Differential: Patient Access Registration staff who are trained and regularly scheduled for shifts and work in the ED receive a Cross-Training Differential of an additional $1.00 per hour.
