TITLE: Automotive Technician

PAY RANGE: Grade 17B $20.0156 - $27.8585 per hour
(With longevity increments when applicable)
NOTE: This position may require shift work including afternoons and weekends and overtime as needed.
**Must be a resident of Niagara Falls, NY within 6 months of appointment**
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves the application of skilled mechanical and technical ability in repairing and maintaining the City’s vehicles and other gasoline and diesel operated equipment. General supervision is received from the Chief-Automotive Division or assigned supervisor. Supervision over others is not an aspect of this position. However, the Automotive Technician may work along with and lead the work of Auto Mechanic Helpers. Because of the nature of this work, this position may involve shift work. The Automotive Technician performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs skilled operations in making general repairs on gasoline and diesel motor equipment such as cars, trucks, heavy dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, graders, pavers, rollers, compressors, material spreaders, leaf collectors and park equipment;
Performs engine and computer diagnostics;
Performs difficult maintenance and repairs to hydraulic system;
Uses computerized shop equipment and works with electronic components;
Performs repairs to automotive electrical system;
Fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
Assembles and times engines;
Repairs or overhauls computer-controlled brake systems, differentials, transmissions and front and rear axles;
Performs New York State inspections and uses on-line computer when required;
Straightens and welds frames and fenders;
Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
Repairs and maintains mechanism of garbage packer;
Repairs snow plow equipment;
Repairs hand and power driven lawn mowers, generators, chain saws, and grass trimmers;
Occasionally operates machine shop equipment, including lathes, grinders, drill presses and other metal working machines to make and repair parts for automotive equipment;
Prepares requisitions for materials.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; thorough knowledge of new vehicle technologies; thorough knowledge of electronic and computer control systems; demonstrated ability to diagnose the different sources of automotive problems swiftly and accurately; ability to make difficult repairs to gasoline and diesel operated motor equipment and other mechanical equipment; working knowledge of the machinist trade; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; ability to lay out work for self; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years’ experience as an Automotive Mechanic or Technician at the journeyman level in a standard repair shop;
OR
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and successful completion of a four (4) year Apprentice Mechanic program.
NOTE: Additional education beyond high school cannot be substituted for the experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License at time of appointment and maintained for duration of employment.
2. Employee must obtain a New York State Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an “O” restriction within six (6) months of permanent appointment and maintain this license throughout the appointment.
3. Employee in this position must obtain a New York State Certificate of Motor Vehicle Inspection within six (6) months of appointment.
4. Employee must possess sufficient hand tools to perform the duties
