Sales Associate – The Animal House
Reports To: Store Manager & Assistant Manager
FLSA Status: Hourly | Flexible based upon store need. (Includes weekends)
Position Summary:
As a Sales Associate at The Animal House, you’ll play an essential role in creating a warm, educational, and engaging experience for every customer and their pet. You’ll assist with daily store operations, offer expert guidance on natural and holistic pet care, and help keep the store running smoothly, cleanly, and joyfully.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer Experience & Sales
- Deliver exceptional customer service with a friendly and knowledgeable approach.
- Assist customers in-store and by phone with product recommendations, special orders, and general questions.
- Share your growing knowledge of pet nutrition, supplements, toys, grooming supplies, and eco-friendly pet care solutions.
- Process transactions accurately using the POS system, including sales, returns, and special orders.
- Help customers carry heavy items and assist with curbside pickup when needed.
Store Operations & Cleanliness.
- Open and close the store following all the procedures outlined.
- Receive, tag, restock, and organize incoming inventory.
- Check and keep inventory counts accurate.
- Maintain store cleanliness throughout your shift, including sweeping, dusting, cleaning up pet accidents, and managing the self-serve dog wash station (Damariscotta only).
- Keep displays well-stocked, organized, and visually appealing.
- Maintain clean and organized stockrooms and entrance areas (including snow shoveling when necessary).
Team Support & Community Engagement
- Participate in ongoing training sessions to stay current on holistic pet wellness trends.
- Share customer feedback with the Store Manager and/or Assistant Manager to support continuous improvement.
- Contribute positively to a supportive, team-oriented environment.
- Help with community events and in-store promotions as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous retail or customer service experience preferred.
- Genuine interest in animals, natural pet wellness, and helping people.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable using computers, POS systems, and cloud-based software.
- Self-motivated, dependable, and able to multitask in a busy retail environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, push, and pull for extended periods.
- Must be able to operate a computer, cash register, and telephone regularly.
