Education: High school graduate; GED equivalent and training in specialty field of a marine industry craft such as Journeyman Electrician.
Technical Training: Military technical training such as Class A or C school in electricity; or journeyman electrician training in a local shipyard.
Description:
Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including climate control, security, and communications. They also may install and maintain the electronic controls for machines in business and industry and on-board military vessels.
Electricians work with blueprints when they install electrical systems. Blueprints indicate the locations of circuits, outlets, load centers, panel boards, and other equipment.
Electricians connect all types of wire to circuit breakers, transformers, outlets, or other components. They join the wires in boxes with various specially designed connectors. During installation, electricians use hand tools such as conduit benders, screwdrivers, pliers, knives, hacksaws, and wire strippers, as well as power tools such as drills and saws. After they finish installing the wiring, they use testing equipment, such as ammeters, ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to check the circuits for proper connections, ensuring electrical compatibility, and safety of components.
Requirements:
Minimum of eight years' experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels; MSC or Maritime vessels; or commercial vessels; or graduate of a military technical training school in the electrical field; plus satisfactory completion of a journeyman or apprenticeship program from a local shipyard in the electrical field.
- Must be able to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government assigned work.
- Must be able to walk, crawl, climb ladders and climb stairs without restrictions
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
