Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Deputy Public Defender to join our legal team. This role requires a JD (Juris Doctor- Degree), MUST be state bar licensed and in good standing. This position involves providing high-quality legal representation to clients in criminal cases, ensuring their rights are protected throughout the judicial process. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in various areas of law: Tribal law, criminal law, juvenile delinquency, child welfare cases, and legal research, with a commitment to justice and client advocacy.
Duties
- Represent clients in criminal proceedings, including arraignments, trials, and sentencing hearings.
- Conduct thorough legal research using tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw to develop case strategies.
- Draft legal documents, motions, and pleadings with precision and clarity.
- Negotiate plea agreements and other resolutions with prosecutors to achieve favorable outcomes for clients.
- Advise clients on their legal rights (Criminal Law, Juvenile Delinquency, and Child Welfare cases)
- Manage case files and maintain accurate records in a law office setting.
- Collaborate with colleagues and participate in litigation efforts to uphold justice and defend client interests.
- Stay current on legal developments relevant to public defense work through ongoing research and professional development.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of Tribal Law, criminal defense procedures and legal principles.
- Proficiency in legal research platforms such as LexisNexis and Westlaw.
- Excellent writing skills for drafting motions, briefs, and reports.
- Effective negotiation skills to facilitate plea agreements or alternative resolutions.
- Experience or familiarity with criminal law, juvenile court, child welfare, tribal law & regulations.
- Ability to perform comprehensive legal research and analysis independently.
- Legal drafting expertise with attention to detail and clarity.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
