Position Overview
The Senior Mechanical Repair Technician is responsible for diagnosing, disassembling, inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and assembling pumps, valves, and other industrial rotating equipment. This position performs a wide range of mechanical repair functions while ensuring all work meets Alaska Roteq quality, safety, and customer requirements. The incumbent provides technical guidance to assembly personnel, completes detailed inspection and repair documentation, and supports both shop and field service operations as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Inspection and Troubleshooting
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues in pumps, valves, and related machinery.
- Dismantle and inspect equipment to identify wear, damage, defects, and root causes of failure.
- Develop detailed repair scopes and document findings with recommendations for corrective action.
- Inspect stationary and rotating components, identify problem areas, and perform necessary repairs.
Repair and Rebuild Activities
- Perform repair and refurbishment of equipment components using hand tools and machine shop equipment.
- Execute hand grinding, filing, fitting, straightening, reaming, honing, drilling, and balancing operations.
- Perform basic lathe and milling machine work as required.
- Restore or prepare parts for reassembly in accordance with engineering specifications and quality standards.
- Conduct dynamic and static balancing of components and assemblies when required.
Assembly and Alignment
- Assemble new and repaired equipment into complete units and subassemblies using blueprints, bills of materials, and technical instructions.
- Perform precision alignments and ensure assemblies meet specified tolerances.
- Complete electrical connections associated with equipment assembly and repair.
- Create sketches and documentation during disassembly to support machining and reassembly activities.
Quality Assurance and Documentation
- Verify that completed work meets drawing specifications and Alaska Roteq quality requirements.
- Complete all required quality control and project documentation packages.
- In the absence of the Quality Control Inspector, perform inspection of machined parts to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Adhere to all company quality control procedures and processes.
- Exercise authority to stop production activities when safety hazards or quality concerns are identified.
Training and Team Support
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to assembly and maintenance personnel.
- Assist in the training and development of assigned personnel.
- Foster a positive work environment based on trust, integrity, teamwork, and respect.
Field Service and Customer Support
- Travel to customer locations as required to inspect, troubleshoot, repair, or commission equipment.
- Support emergency service requirements and respond to urgent customer needs.
- Participate in on-call rotations and emergency response activities when assigned.
Safety and Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform work in a manner that promotes safe conditions throughout the facility.
- Comply with company operating policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
- Minimum of four (4) years of related mechanical repair, machining, or rotating equipment experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Graduation from a recognized mechanical or technical training program is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret simple to complex engineering drawings, blueprints, manuals, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency in the use of precision measuring instruments, hand tools, and shop equipment.
- Working knowledge of shop mathematics, including trigonometry, angles, radii, and chord calculations.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and customers.
- Ability to interpret written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions and apply them in practical situations.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, use hands, reach, talk, and hear.
- Occasionally required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds; heavier loads require assistance or appropriate lifting equipment.
- Must possess close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Industrial shop environment with regular exposure to moving mechanical equipment.
- Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions and potential electrical hazards.
- Moderate noise levels are typical.
- Occasional travel is required to support field service projects and customer needs.
- Participation in on-call and emergency response work may be required.
Additional Requirements
- Compliance with Alaska Roteq’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy, including random drug testing.
- Adherence to all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Ability to relocate to or work from the Wasilla, Alaska location.
- Must maintain an Alaska Driver’s License.
- Must qualify for a TWIC card, which requires passing a Criminal Background Check.
Compensation and Benefits
- Compensation based on experience up to $40 per hour
